PFFL Trivia

Which team beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 51-0 in Pittsburgh on opening day in 1989?
Cleveland Browns Baltimore Colts Green Bay Packers Cincinnati Bengals

Pittsburgh Survivor Football

It wasn’t the worst first week the contest ever had; that’s reserved for the Houston upset of Miami in 2003 when 70% of the contest perished in the first three hours of the contest, but a 32% loss in week 1 is still pretty significant. That represents 145 of the 452 entries failing to pick a winner. Now if New England would have went down... which they almost did by the way after losing Brady, then the three highest spreads on the board would have all lost outright and the massacre would have been on. As is two of the three highest spreads did lose outright leaving 307 of the 452 week 1 contestants to continue on to week 2.

2008 Draft

For the second year in a row LT was the consensus #1 pick over all conferences. The two-spot was divided up between Westbrook and Peterson. The value of picking first is debatable but it’s interesting that a team with the first pick in the draft has won the PFFL championship just once, and that was last year. Time will tell but the best value pick in the draft could be the next to last pick in the Central when the Donators chose backup QB and now starting New England QB Matt Cassel. The question of who had the best draft is also debatable but it seems the website software has some opinions: By selecting the “Draft” link on the left side of the home page of each conference site you will have an option to display the “Draft Recap.” For what it’s worth myfantasyleague thinks Green Apple had the best draft in the East; they like the Nasty Aggravators draft in the Central and Brookline’s in the West.

Rookies/New Teams

The PFFL welcomes one rookie team this year: the Central conference’s Reno. The term rookie in fantasy football has very little meaning any more and in the PFFL it merely means a team where the owner never participated in the PFFL before. The Harmony Hornets were the first rookie team to win the PFFL Championship doing so in 2005. There are also two new non-rookie teams in the league this year: Tommy Guns and Little Johnny’s both in the East. One correction to take note of is on the draft sheet Little Johnny’s was penciled in for the Central but a last minute change put them in the East and R&J Inc. over to the Central.

Free Agency

Requests for free agents may be made every week from Tuesday at noon to Friday at 8:00 p.m. Teams may also expand their rosters to 19 players starting this week. Every Friday at 8:00 p.m. requests will be processed according to each teams waiver rank. Note that teams may now acquire up to 2 players each week through free agency so their will now be two rounds of waiver requests each week. The week one waiver rank is the opposite of the original draft order and the system will maintain a rolling draft order putting the team that makes a pick to the bottom.

New Features

One feature that the MyFantasyLeague.com site has added this year is the Draft Recap and Fantasy Game Recaps. I have made the game recaps available on the home page of each conference and the Draft Recap can be accessed by clicking on the Draft link under the League section of links on the left side of the conference websites. The site chooses one game as the Game of the Week and displays that first. They seem fairly detailed and worthwhile but their is one quirk with the teams playing against the average each week giving them a shutout victory. I will contact the site and see if this is something that can be remedied.

PFFL Stuff

The opening day league scoring average across all conferences was 113, a little light compared to last year's 121 for the opening frame. Last year's final average finished up at 120. The current scoring system was put into place in 2006. The 2006 average was 115, so along with last year's 120 that makes a 117.5 average over the last two years with the current scoring; meaning this year's opening week was below average.

    ● The defending champions Syndicate made a case for being the first team to ever win a second PFFL Championship by taking a Team of the Week Honor right out of the gate.

    ● Reminder that the teams playing against the average each week are playing against that week's average only and their team's score is included in that average.

    ● Those that follow the games on a computer might want to consider downloading the MyFantasyLeague.com Game Day program available through the Live Scoring section on the web sites. This is a free download. It is a much more comprehensive program and also much faster with the updates.

    ● All teams should visit their Franchise Setup/Advanced Setup section at the conference websites under the Owners tab and select their personal preference options for the year. Also in this section is the listing of each team's email addresses. It is a good idea to check all information for accuracy.

    ● The weekly newsletter will no longer be put out in pdf format. Instead it will be created and posted right here on the PFFL Home Site.

    ● I would like to welcome everyone to the 17th season of the PFFL and thank all who are participating this year!

PFFL Trivia Answer

Cleveland Browns

After a commanding 51-0 road win in Pittsburgh, the Browns still only managed to split the season series after losing to the Steelers in a 17-7 home game. The two teams played in the AFC Central at the time and played each other twice a year. Opening day does not always foreshadow how things will turn out. Both the Browns and Steelers made it to the playoffs that year. Cleveland won a 33-30 win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional Playoffs, and had to go into Denver, who had knocked off Pittsburgh, 24-23. Pittsburgh had beaten the Houston Oilers in Houston, 23-20, in overtime. The Broncos ended the Browns' season for the third time in four years during the AFC Championship.
