Pittsburgh Survivor Football

For the third straight week a major favorite has lost outright! New England almost lost in week 1 when Brady went down but held on that day to spare 133 contestants an early exit. This week they not only didn't hold on but got blown out, blowing up 48 more entries. The contest has now suffered 57% casualties in just the first three weeks. Of the 452 starting entries, 255 have perished leaving just 197 to move into week 4.

Tommy GunsLittle Tommy provided some bulletin board material for their opponents predicting another big week, but he backed it up with another win and another weekly first. Every year there are one or two teams that just go off and right now it looks like the Tommy Guns are one of those teams. They have taken a weekly first in two of the first three weeks and the one week they didn't came in second. They have the max wins and VP possible for three weeks in, lead the league in total points, and are tied for most weekly winnings. The only thing they haven't done is take a Team of the Week.

Rebels
Luck has a way of equaling out over time: Last year the Rebels were one of the leaders in points scored against; having a lot to do with their poor season. This year so far they are among the teams with the fewest points scored against allowing them to equal their best start ever. In 2003 they also began the year 3-0 but - and I hate to jinx you William but they finished 4-7. They are one of just four teams in double digit VP and one of just five still undefeated in the league.

Green AppleGreen Apple has also been fortunate in the points against category so far this year posting a 3-0 record from the sixth-place-point position in the conference. They won a come-from-behind victory over Commish East on Monday night allowing them to keep their undefeated status and improve on their best start ever in the PFFL. I'm not a sore loser or anything but to keep the record straight I never said: "We only have to look in the mirror" as was stated in the Game Recaps. But with a potential of 162 points, I guess it's true!

Little Johnny'sLittle Johnny's has been in the league for just 3 weeks but has already done something that has never been done before in the PFFL: hold a top tier position with a losing record. Actually thought this might be some kind of mistake at first but the standings don't lie. If the League Average would have paid a franchise fee, they would be in fourth with a 2-1 record instead of Little Johnny's.

Franchise VP W-L-T
Tommy Guns 12 3-0-0
Rebels 10 3-0-0

PFFL CENTRAL

Twisted HelmetsThe Twisted Helmets earned as many VP this week as they did the first two - 4. Illustrating how quickly teams can move in the standings, especially early in the season, the Helmets utilized back-to-back weekly firsts to move from 10th to 1st in 2 weeks. With 5 teams at 2-1 and 8VP, they hardly have a grip on the top spot. In fact, the only thing putting them in first right now is their slim total point lead. A bad week this week and they could be out of the top tier as fast as they got in.

SyndicateThe
Syndicate were knocked out of the undefeated ranks by the Knockout Kings this week - just couldn't resist that, sorry Mic. The single VP they earned in the loss kept them in the top two; had they not earned that 1VP they would have dropped to fourth. The entire top tier is now tied at 2-1, 8VP and are all within 34 points of each other.

Weekend WarriorsThe Weekend Warriors also fell from the Central unbeaten ranks losing a high-scoring affair with the Twisted Helmets. They were actually kind of unlucky to play the team that earned Team of the Week Honors; usually when you score 131 points your going to win. Like the Syndicate the 1VP they earned in the loss allowed them to drop just one spot. They lose the top two but remain in the top tier in third.

Knockout KingsLike a heavyweight fighter throwing roundhouses, the Knockout Kings have been all or nothing the first three weeks. Week 1 they connected with 4VP and a second-place start; then hit the canvass in week 2 placing in the bottom three in weekly points resulting in zero VP knocking them right back out of the top tier. This week they got off the canvas and landed another roundhouse for 4VP putting them right back in the top four. I just love team names that I can use analogies with!

PFFL WEST

MNEThis is MNE's second year in the league and the second time they have opened the year with the max wins (3-0) and max VP (12) through 3 weeks. The one difference from last year is they are in first instead of second at this time. I'm sure they wish the differences keep coming because last year they went on to lose their next three and finished the year at 5-6. But right now it's so far so good as they are one of just two teams in the league with the max wins and VP going into week 4.

Downtowners

What was written above about MNE you can just about repeat here for the Downtowners with one exception: Switch the "one difference" from last year to they are in second instead of first at this time and everything else is exactly the same. Yes, they too after a 3-0 start finished the year at 5-6. There is one other very important difference in the two seasons: even though they both finished with 5-6 records, because of a 6VP and a pile of total points difference, MNE managed to finish with the third seed while the Downtowners fell to 9th missing the playoffs entirely.

world-series-of-poker.pngAfter a loss last week the Rounder 17 rebounded in a big way with their first 4VP week. Last year at this time they were 1-1-1 and in fourth so they are having an even better start from last year when they came within 2 points of a conference title. Currently there are only 4 teams with more VP and 2 teams with more total points in the entire league.

BrooklineAfter their best start to a season ever in the PFFL, Brookline took a step backwards scoring just 85 points and going without any VP for the week. They started the year in second, fell to third in week 2 and have now fallen to fourth this week. But that's looking at the glass half empty. On the bright side they have a winning record of 2-1 and are in the top tier in fourth.

PFFL Stuff

● The byes start this week - Week 4

● On the eve of the bye weeks, the scoring took a bit of a dive. After an up week in week 2 where the scoring hit 124, week 3 dipped to 110 well below the last two-year's average of 117.5. The lowest week of scoring over the last two years was 104 in week 5 of last year.

● Through the first 3 weeks of the season, the East Conference has had 1 game decided by 3 points, 2 games decided by 2 points, and 3 games decided by a single point.

● This past week Brian Griese dropped back 67 times to pass against Chicago and wasn't sacked once! The last time the Bears have gone without a sack in a game was November 2006.

● Anyone who drafted Randy Moss in the first round has to be sick right now.

● Every year someone has to be the unlucky team that has the most points scored against them. Commish East is third in East Conference points yet 0-3 in record. Right now it is them!

● Did you know: Each home team must provide 24 balls for each game but the NFL provides 12 additional balls for kicking. It used to be each home team had to provide all 36 but because kickers were altering the balls to enhance their performance when kicked, the NFL started providing balls for kicking purposes only.

PFFL Trivia Answer

Bobby Douglass

Douglass' claim to fame was setting the NFL record for rushing yards in a single season by a quarterback, with 968 yards for the Chicago Bears in 1972. His passing statistics, however, brought him nowhere near Canton. Tony Dorsett was enshrined in 1994, Dierdorf in 1996, and Dickerson in 1999.
