Pittsburgh Survivor Football

     Survivor 1:
The default pick may not have lost in a while but what it also hasn't done is cover a spread. This week's default pick was favored by 14.5 and won by nine, but believe me, the game was a lot closer than that. In fact probably as close as a face mask penalty not being called that should have. And the second highest spread and second most picked team on the board won by just two. And it took a last second field goal for that. Although none of the big favorites lost, one did fail to win. One contestant chose Philly and since a contestant's pick must win the game, the Philadelphia-Cincinnati tie lowered the contest from 38 to 37. I think it also lowered Donovan McNabb's IQ from 68 to 67.

Survivor 2: The second contest hasn't taken a big hit yet but those small hits can add up. There were a total of 20 contestants lost in the second contest this week, 16 of which were on Philadelphia. The biggest hit was in week 9 when 25 survivors were lost. So far a total of 65 of the opening 228 have been lost leaving 163 entries still active for week 12.

Week 12 Wildcard Week
: The PFFL postseason kicks off in week 12 with the wildcard games. The 5th thru 8th ranked teams in each conference are the wildcard teams. The 1st thru 4th ranked teams have a bye. The 10th and 11th ranked teams play each other in the first round of the Consolation Tournament and the 9th ranked team gets a first round CT bye. The Wildcard losers are eliminated from the playoffs but play in the second round of the CT in week 13. The postseason formats and schedules are determined by team rank and can be accessed here: Playoff Formats

Wildcard Week

PFFL EAST

Little Johnny's#1 Little Johnny's: He who laughs last, laughs best. No I'm not referring to the fact that the T Bones third straight loss has displaced them from the top spot; although I did get a pretty good laugh out of that one. No I'm referring to the fact that Little Johnny's haven't been in first place all year until now. They definitely saved the best for last and can now take the next two weeks off.

Tommy Guns

#2 Tommy Guns: After spending the first seven weeks in the top two, a four-game losing streak not only put the double byes in jeopardy, but the top tier itself. But they regrouped in the final week with a solid 4VP win and finish with the #2 rank and of course those two big byes.

T Bones#3 T Bones: After enjoying the top spot for the previous three weeks, they not only relinquish it in the final week via their third straight loss, but they also managed to lose second as well. Now there's nothing wrong with just one bye and there are 7 other teams that would love to have one, but two byes are twice as nice. After reading the T Bones' message board post entitled "losing to cleantown," referring to their loss to them this week that cost them the top two, well, I'm actually speechless. I just wish I could say the same for the T Bones.

Green Apple

#4 Green Apple: The first half of the season things were falling their way as they hung around the top two positions. The second half however they struggled just to stay in the top tier occupying no higher than fourth since week 5. They were unlucky to play the Team of the Week recipient this week when they needed a win most, but as it did early in the season circumstances fell their way, and even with a loss they earn an all important bye.

Commish East#5 Commish East: If the Boys of Autumn had scored just one more point and Cleantown three more, Commish East gets a bye. Not in playoffs but in the Consolation Tournament. Even though they finished with the 5th rank, that's how close they came to the 9th rank.

Rebels

#6 Rebels: Although they were seventh in East points after seven weeks, they were 6-1 and in first place in the standings. Since then however they must have lost their rabbits foot because they haven't won another game losing their last four. Because they now don't have a bye they can't afford to make it five in a row.

#7 Justice: How could they be first in East points yet seventh in the standings? The same way the Rebels were seventh in points yet first in the standings, weird science! After putting up with this difficulty through the regular season, Dave's frustration boiled over this week when it looked for a time that he might not even earn a wildcard. His phone call to me entailed an ultimatum of he either at least earns a wildcard or he's out next year. I fear a lawsuit if they go one and out in the wildcard round.

Cleantown#8 Cleantown: As strange as the East race has been is also as close as it has been. So it's only befitting that the final wildcard in the East was decided by some extraordinary events and the closest score of all, a tie. And of course it all went down in the fourth quarter of a Monday night game. At the end of the day Cleantown's postseason life came down to who won the Commish East - Boys of Autumn game. If the Boys won Cleantown was out. After a series of fourth quarter events that included a defensive TD that put the Boys ahead; points scored against that defense that put the Boys behind; 1 point for an interception that put the Boys back ahead; a successful coaches challenge that overturned the interception that took the point away; after all that there was 1:44 left in the football game and the Boys of Autumn were tied with Commish East. The Boys had Jamal Lewis, Buffalo's defense and 1:44 to score one point for a wildcard. In that time Lewis failed to catch a pass, even though he went out in the pattern several times but wasn't thrown to, or gain 5 more yards he needed for another point because they didn't hand it off to him, and although they came close a couple times, real close in fact, Buffalo failed to intercept or get a sack and the game finished in a tie. How do I know so many details about this game? Because I thought I was the one to be knocked out if the Boys of Autumn won until the next day when I discovered that Cleantown only earned 2VP in their win putting them on the hook for this game and not me. I got three more grey hairs for nothing.

PFFL CENTRAL

Syndicate#1 Syndicate: They took a big step toward winning back to back championships by earning back to back #1 rankings. They won it all last year as a #1 seed and will attempt to repeat from the most desirable position again this year. Mick it's going your way right now so if you stay on your medication and keep your message board posts in the realm of coherency, I will not honor your fellow competitors request for committal.

Twisted Helmets#2 Twisted Helmets: In order to earn the #1 they first needed to win, then have both the Nasty Aggravators and the Syndicate lose. With the Syndicate winning the #1 rank was out but an Aggravators' loss opened the door to the #2 and the Helmets accepted the invitation. Last year the Syndicate and Helmets also finished first and second in the conference - only it was the West Conference. They both moved over from the West to the Central this year but with the same results.

#3 Nasty Aggravators: Coming into the week they were in second and riding a seven-game win streak. Had they reached an eight-game win streak they would still be in second with two byes. The worst they could have done is third so evidently they did the worse they could - but third and one bye is anything but the worse they could have done for the year.

Weekend Warriors#4 Weekend Warriors: There was no long division in their formula, just simple arithmetic. If they beat the Hornets they get a bye, if not a wildcard. They got a bye.

SS Stoggies#5 SS Stoggies: They put out the effort with a 4VP week but were caught in the middle of a rock and a hard place for earning a bye. Except for one remote scenario they were stuck with a wildcard only. They didn't hit the lottery so it's a wildcard.

Harmony Hornets

#6 Harmony Hornets: See the Warriors: The worst they could do was a wildcard. They didn't do their worst but they did get a wildcard.

Knockout Kings#7 Knockout Kings: They were in the same situation as the Stoggies except their scenario to get a bye was even more remote. They didn't hit the power ball so it's a wildcard.

The Steve Irwin Crocodile's#8 Steve Irwin Crocodiles: They didn't have a wildcard locked up and their loss left the opportunity for R&J to take the last wildcard. R&J actually outscored them by 18 but they weren't playing them, so it's the Crocks that will swim in the wildcard waters.

PFFL WEST

Downtowners#1 Downtowners: There was no doubt they were getting two byes but as for finishing #1 or #2 it was still up in the air. They put up a good score in 134, actually the fourth best for the week in the West, but it wasn't enough in this particular week for a win. But when your on top someone must pass you and the JR's Boys didn't take advantage of their loss. So advantage the Downtowners with the #1 rank in the West.

JR's Boys

#2 JR's Boys: Riding a seven-game win streak the momentum was theirs and with the Downtowners losing the opportunity was also theirs. The win streak was broken however so no #1, but no less than the #2 was assured going in which means two big byes were also assured.

Rounder 17#3 Rounder 17: The two byes were out of reach but the one bye wasn't guaranteed either. Their 4VP week left nothing to chance and it even moved them up a notch to third. They could have gotten away with 3VP but anything less and MNE was poised to knock them out.

Commish West

#4 Commish West: There was just one three-pronged scenario that could have kept them from a bye. Two of the three were realized but the one where they earn 0VP was not so it's a week 12 vacation coming up.

MNE

#5 MNE: They did everything they could to earn a bye but needed help elsewhere to make it happen. No one cooperated so up next is a week 12 wildcard game.

Brookline

#6 Brookline: Had no chance at a bye but only a scenario that was as complex as the formula for nuclear fission could have unseated them from a wildcard. We didn't all blow up so a wildcard it is for Brookline.

Irish Talbots

#7 Irish Talbots: Were in almost the same situation as Brookline except the one scenario that could knock them out wasn't quite as remote. But it was remote enough so they will play in the PFFL playoffs in week 12.

Apaches

#8 Apaches: They were far from assured a wildcard and the fact that they earned 0VP for the week made it very possible for the Sharks to steal the final wildcard position. In fact had the Sharks scored 23 more points the possibility would have become reality and the Sharks would have a #8 in front of their name instead of the Apaches.
