PFFL Trivia

Misused or just being a workhorse, who was the first running back in history to carry the ball 400 times in a season ?
Earl Campbell James Wilder John Riggins George Rodgers

Pittsburgh Survivor Football

At the rate of loss through the first two weeks, it seems highly unlikely anyone makes it to week 17 this year! Week 2 wasn't quite as bad as the first but with 60 more contestants falling by the way side, the contest has now lost close to half its contingent in two short weeks. The Seahawks were responsible for most of the damage this week killing off 40 of the 60 week 2 losers. The 20 other losers were spread out over four different teams. The contest is now down to 247 from its original 452.

PFFL TOP TIER

PFFL EAST

Tommy GunsThe only thing the Tommy Guns missed out on in the first two weeks is a Team of the Week Honor. They've taken a first, a second, and are one of only two teams in the league to earn the max of 8 VP. This being their first season in the league as a spin-off team of TnT in the Central, they have no history to speak of in the league, but if they continue their success - and Little Tommy indicated his team looks even better for week 3 than the first two - there will be a lot to talk about next year.

Green AppleGreen Apple is a team that does have some history going back as far as 2000 but were not in the league continuously. They were the last two years though and opened 1-1 in both years with 3 and 4 VP respectively. They haven't had much success in the postseason but are having their best start ever in the PFFL.

Rebels

The Rebels have more than a little history going all the way back to 2001, but they would like to forget the last two years of that history when they opened the season 0-2 and in dead last both years. This year they've redeemed themselves with a 2-0 and third-place start, their best start since 2003 when they opened the year 2-0 and in first.

T Bones

Nobody has more history than the T Bones so naturally they have had just about every kind of start you could have; except they never started the year in first after two weeks. This is the third-straight year they started the year 1-1.

PFFL CENTRAL

SyndicateThe defending champions Syndicate are no stranger to 2-0 starts doing it in back to back years in "03 and '04, but they didn't win the championship in those years. They won the championship last year after a 1-1 sixth-place start. In 16 years no team has ever won a second championship let alone going back-to-back. With a 2-0 and 7VP start the Syndicate is on track to do both!

Weekend WarriorsThe Weekend Warriors have been in the Central conference since entering the league in 2001 but have never won the conference title. In fact they have never won any titles of any kind. This is the fourth time they have started the year 2-0 so if the third time wasn't the charm maybe the fourth will be.

Give.orgThe Donators enter their third year in the league 1-1 after two weeks but they shouldn't take much stock in their position after two weeks. Last year they opened 2-0 and finished 4-7. While their first year in the league they opened the year 0-2 and finished in the PFFL Championship Game representing the Central Conference.

Twisted Helmets The Twisted Helmets open their third year in the league the same way they opened their first two, in the top four. Their first two years they were 2-0 and 1-0-1 respectively and earned 6VP both times. This year they open 1-1 with 2 less VP.

PFFL WEST

MNEFor the second year in a row MNE opens the year at full throttle with the max wins and max VP for the first two weeks. But last year they had more to show for their early efforts earning a Team of the Week Honor in week 2. This year they only have a second-place finish to show for their great start. They were actually a little unlucky to earn just a second with a 171-point week but a bit of consolation is this year they are in first after two weeks while last year managed only second.

Downtowners

The Downtowners were nearly perfect for the second year in a row with another 2-0 start but one shy of the max VP with 7. Last year they were perfect at 2-0 and 8VP. A fast start is becoming habit with them as they have started three of the last four years 2-0 now. The funny thing is that one year they didn't start 2-0 they started 0-2 and won the PFFL Championship.

BrooklineFor the first time since their inception in 2003, Brookline has opened the year without a loss. With the exception of '04 when they started the year 0-2, they opened 1-1 each year until now. Even in the three years prior to '03 when they were part of the T&G team, they never started a season 2-0.

In their rookie season last year Rounder 17 came within two points of playing for the PFFL Championship. They opened that year 1-0-1 in second place after the first two weeks. Their sophomore year they've slipped a bit starting out with one win and one loss but still open the year in the top tier.

PFFL Stuff

● The week 2 scoring was considerably higher than the opening week with a post of 124; this was 11 points higher than the 113 league average from week 1. Continuing to use the last two years average of 117.5 as the standard because no scoring or conference size changes occurred in this period, it was definitely an above average week for scoring. The highest week over the last two years was actually last year's week 2: a 135 average was recorded over all conferences for that week.

    ● The byes start in week 4 - plan accordingly.

    ● The record for highest single week belongs to the Sharks 202 points in week 6 of last year. Justice came close this week with 192 winning them a Team of the Week Honor.

    ● Worried about a slow start? Last year all four conference champions started the season 1-1 while the year before the league champion and the runner up both started the year 0-2!

PFFL Trivia Answer

James Wilder

The others never carried the ball 400 times in a season. Wilder went from 161 carries in 1983, to 407 for the Buccaneers in 1984. He rushed for 1544 yards for a 3.8 average and 13 TDs in his record-setting season. Eric Dickerson was the second running back in history to carry the ball for more than 400 times in a season in 1986 with the Rams, then Jamal Anderson was the third with 410 for the Atlanta Falcons in 1998.
