Pittsburgh Survivor Football

For the first time this year a double-digit favorite did not lose outright. Of the eight different teams that were picked to win this week, three failed to do so but none were favored by more than a touchdown. The most heavily played team of the week Dallas put a scare into 53 of the 91 week 5 entries by struggling to beat Cincinnati, but they did prevail breaking the streak of big favorites losing outright. A total of ten contestants expired on the three losing picks bringing the total number of survivors down to 81. The second contest Survivor 2 will start in week 7.

PFFL EAST

Tommy GunsThe Tommy Guns are back on track and back on top in the East. After failing to break 100 last week costing them the conference lead, they've rebounded with their fourth win in five tries. They didn't win the full 4VP but didn't need to because of Green Apple's loss. In a low scoring week their solid 120 points puts them back on top of the East in total points and tied with the Downtowners for the overall league lead. Their 15VP is second only to the Downtowners 18. The game recaps report that they could have lost their game had their opponent played different players. But what it doesn't report is that the Tommy Guns efficiency rating was 100% for the week; more than deserving them of this game. In fact, they had the only perfect efficiency rating in the entire league for the week.

Green AppleWith a team scoring average of just that, average (116.4), it was just a matter of time before Green Apple dropped from the unbeaten ranks. But then again, they were playing the league average this week which has been a more than formidable foe for East teams winning in four of the five weeks. The Apple put up just 101 points this week dropping them to sixth in East scoring and 17th overall, but it was at least good enough to earn them 1VP. The loss drops them from the top spot but not from the top two and their 14VP is tied for third best in the league.

RebelsHow do you win a game with 91 points and an efficiency rating of 67.4 for the week? I'll tell you how: play a team with 90 points and an efficiency rating of 69.8 for the week. The Rebels 91-90 squeaker over Justice keeps them in third and knocks Justice out of the top tier to sixth. Yeah a win is a win but VP is VP and the 91 points scored, although enough to win the game, wasn't enough to earn any VP other than the two for the win. In all fairness though if both teams would have played their best lineups, the Rebels still would have won 135-129. See William, I can be tough but at least I'm fair!

T BonesUnless you don't read your email or the message board, have a phone, or live in shouting distance of the Pittsburgh Steak Co., you wouldn't know that Dean, I mean the T Bones, won team of the Week Honors this week. I wouldn't be surprised if it's mentioned on Wannstedt's radio show this week. I guess now I have to say something nice about the T Bones: Ok, they are back in the top tier in fourth - even though they are ranked ninth in East points. Well at least this will give Dean something other than politics to talk about on Wednesday night.

PFFL CENTRAL

Twisted HelmetsHad the Twisted Helmets scored one less point this week, they would be in third place instead of first. Their 107-106 victory over the SS Stoggies has them tied with two other teams at 14VP but their #1 total point rank in the conference has them on top of those teams in the standings. After opening the year with a loss, they have won their last four straight giving them the second-longest winning streak in the league second only to the undefeated Downtowners. Unless there is a 100% efficiency rating, in every game there are points left on the bench. A different lineup by the Stoggies would have beat the Helmets but the higher potential points for the game belongs to the Helmets so you can say all is as it should be.

SyndicateThe
Syndicate left a few points on the bench themselves but their opponent left a few more giving them a win to keep pace with the red-hot Helmets. Their win along with the Knockout Kings' loss has created a three-way tie at 14VP and all three teams are separated by just nine total points. I was very pleased with Mickey's choice of charities he chose to donate his Coach of the Year Award prize money to if he is lucky enough to win it. He informed me he would be pleased to give his winnings to "The Mental Wellness Association for Fantasy Football Commissioners." I always knew you were a class act Mick!

Knockout KingsThe bad news is the
Knockout Kings lost their game. The good news is they still earned 2VP by placing in the top three in point scoring for the week. The moral of the story is in the VP system you don't go away empty handed when you have a good week but are unlucky enough to play the top team for the week. If they had played just about any other team this week they would still be in first with a 2VP lead over second. Luck is what it is and hopefully it equals out in the end but for now the Kings must settle for a three-way tie at the top with 14VP.

DonatorsAfter a brief visit in week 2, the Donators return to the top tier in week 5 on the crest of their second 4VP week of the year. Their team name is a bit of a contradiction as their first year in the league they not only won the Central Conference Title, but came in second in the championship game. Last year they settled for a wildcard but did advance to the first round so Donating is something they really have no experience with. And currently residing in the top tier they are poised to not donate this year either.

PFFL WEST

DowntownersThere is now just one undefeated team remaining in the PFFL but just barely! The Downtowners couldn't have been too confident going into Monday night with a 17-point lead because their opponent MNE had the explosive Reggie Bush left to play. If kick returns counted for individual players there would be no undefeated teams remaining. Although a very respectable number, Bush managed just 16 giving the Downtowners a one-point win and a commanding lead in the West. Since the VP system was instituted in 2006, the largest VP lead after five weeks was three. After five weeks this year the Downtowners have a 5VP and two-game lead in the West. I think last year's collapse after a 3-0 start is definitely behind them!

MNEIt's kind of hard to feel sorry for a second-place team but MNE's one-point loss to the Downtowners this week was devastating. If Reggie Bush scores just two more points on Monday night, the difference in their position in the standings is major: Instead of the Downtowners being in first with a 5VP lead, they would be in first with a 1VP lead. That's a 6VP turnaround because of just two points not scored! The reality now is MNE is tied with six other teams at 3-2 and three other teams at 5VP behind the leader. You could say the Monday Night Express (MNE) was derailed on Monday night by two lousy points.

world-series-of-poker.pngIt seems we jinxed the Rounder 17 when we reported last week that they were the only team in the league without a week under the league average. Well they are just like the rest of us now after losing their second game of the year 128-104. Their 104 points was well below the league average but there were three teams worse than 104 this week allowing them to at least earn 1VP in the loss. They can blame the loss and the low point total on their coaching staff for recording a 67.5 efficiency rating in the game. Hind sight is 20-20 but with 154 potential points for the week, someone's job just may be in jeopardy.

Commish West

Commish West's slow start is officially behind them. They have now won their last three in a row and finished first or second in those three wins. They too left some serious points on the bench this week but unlike the Rounder 17 it didn't cost them a game. Still feeling the effects of their slow start they were unable to overtake anyone with the win. But now that they have moved up into fourth in conference points and are tied with the entire top tier except the Downtowners at 3-2 and 13VP, another good week could easily move them into second.

PFFL STUFF

● Well the down-up down-up trend continues in the scoring as week 5 is down after an up week 4. Here is the average scoring through the first five weeks for all three conferences: 113, 124, 110, 121, 110. As you can see the bye weeks seem to have no effect at all on the scoring pattern. In fact sometimes NFL scoring doesn't either because it is reported that week 3 of this year was the 10th highest single week for NFL scoring with 747 points yet it was a down week for us. Like I said last week: go figure! This latest week dropped the yearly scoring average 1.5 points to 115.5.

● Please take care in choosing your waiver picks each week. A couple of you have selected sound-a-like players in the list without realizing it until it was too late. It is very easy to do as alike names are right next to each other in the list. I myself have done it but caught it after I went back in to double check my selections. These are the kind of mistakes that cost GMs their jobs.

● They might start calling it the cardiac East! Two more one-point games this week brings the total to five one-point games through the first five weeks. There have been a total of two - both this week by the way - in the other two conferences.

● There's no Justice in the East. Justice and Commish East are 2nd and 3rd in conference scoring yet Justice is 6th in the standings and Commish East is 9th. I guess the VP system can do only so much.

● How frustrated are the Sharks? They just chastised B&B on the message board for not responding quick enough to their trade offers. B&B's reason: I was in the hospital, sorry. And Franklin is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. They may call it fantasy but it feels real to us!

● Hey give me about 10 points and I can rewrite the standings. With seven one-point games and a few more two and three pointers, turn those games around and the standings would look significantly different!

CORRECTION: This is where I fess up to my mistakes. I reported in week 3 that Little Johnny's was the first team to be in the top tier with a losing record. Actually last year MNE was in third place in week 9 with a 4-5 record, dropped out in week 10 with a loss then a week 11 win earned them the third rank with a 5-6 record because of a high point and VP total.

TIP: In the future I will have a printer-friendly page available but for now if for some reason you would like to print this newsletter the best method is this: Simply select (hold down the left mouse button and drag the cursor over the area of choice) the newsletter portion of the page, right click anywhere in the selected area, and choose Print... with the three dots after Print. Then under Page Range check off Selection. This will print only the area you selected and not the links to the left or the top section.

● The League Average has proven to be a tough competitor. Through the first five weeks it sports a 10-5 record. It especially likes the East competition where it has gone 4-1. It is 3-2 in both the Central and West.

PFFL Trivia Answer

Terry Metcalf

Metcalf of the St. Louis Cardinals set a record of 14 in 1974, then broke his record by losing the ball 15 times in 1976. Terry played for only six seasons, and retired with 62 fumbles. The Redskins converted Metcalf to wide receiver in his final season in 1981. All the others had a season high of 11. Harris fumbled 11 times with the Steelers in 1979. Payton also fumbled a season high of 11 in 1977 with the Bears. Tyler did it in 1981 with the Rams.
