Pittsburgh Survivor Football
Survivor 1: As expected week 16's schedule
caused some problems - for those that didn't have New England left anyway! Of
the seven different teams picked three lost resulting in 6 casualties. And it
could have been five of seven teams losing if San Fran didn't come from behind
late and the Giants win in OT. It used to be a big deal just to survive past
week 10 but in three of the last four years multiple contestants have reached
the final week, but never as many as this year. Ten survivors chose right 16
straight times to reach the promise land of week 17. Believe it or not, one of
the ten actually have Pittsburgh remaining. I don't think they will pass on
them this time with a home game against Cleveland. Well unless the other 9 lose it
is now a matter of how many co-champions will share in the trophy.
Survivor 2: Week 16 was also hard on the second contest suffering its
highest casualty count of the year, 30. More losing teams were picked than
winners as of the 13 different teams chosen, 7 lost. Even with a
30-hit in week 16, the second contest will enter the final week with the most
survivors ever, 78.

FINAL WEEK - PFFL TOTAL POINT CHAMPIONSHIP |
Week 17: Each conference
will crown separate total point champions. The team with the most points of
the three conferences will earn the PFFL 2008 Total Point Championship Title.
The second and third-place point finishers in each conference will also be
awarded considerations.

The elusive second
championship remains at large with the Syndicate failing to win
back to back championships. Not a bad two years though! The
projections did indicate a third-place finish but their potential
points reveal history could have been made. They actually had the
highest PP total of the three of 156! Now don't get me wrong,
according to the projections they made no mistakes. But had they
thought outside the box on their third RB and gone with Derrick Ward
over De'Shaun Foster, they tie the Rounders with 126 and their #1 rank
would have made them the #1 team in the PFFL for 2008. Had Gore played
. . . well, we'll never know. But hey, we have finally found the right
combination of medications for Mickey so lets not dwell on this and
set off a relapse.
There were two things that were true about the Tommy
Guns effort to win their first championship: One, the projections
favored their players over the other two for week 16 and two, the
strength of their team was their running backs so it probably would
come down to how they performed. Pierre Thomas should have had a
monster game and 19 points isn't bad mind you, but I can imaging the
frustration the Guns must have had watching Robert Meachem, Deuce
McAllister, and the final straw, someone named Mike Bell get rushing
TDs. The final blow came when Michael Turner contributed just 13 and
their horse AP even less with 11. We said they would go as their RBs go and as a
whole they were average at best; consequently, so was their score.
As championship games go this one was kind of tame but
officially it did come down to Monday night. The Syndicate had a
111-105 lead over Rounder 17 and 111-87 over the Guns, but both
opponents had Aaron Rodgers left and the Syndicate was empty. Hey,
Brady went down in the first quarter! Rodgers didn't though and it was
basically over early - unless the Guns who also had Robbie Gould could
get 18
kicking points. Well it wasn't out of the question but with just three in the first half we weren't holding our breath in the second. In week
13 we stated that the Rounders had the kind of players to go all the
way - but also the kind that needed good matchups. Well their matchups
were not all that great this week and the fact that they put up their
worst score of their four postseason games maybe proves out the
theory. We also stated that the Rounders had the players to force
other teams to put up a good number to beat them. Neither of their opponents
broke the league average hence the victory. The bottom line is with a
playoff game average of 132 they weren't going to give it away. They
produced the opportunity to give it away though when they opted to use Joe Nedney over Stephen Gostkowski; a decision that cost them 11 points.
Had the Syndicate's Andre Johnson and Steve Smith produced or the Guns
RBs play up to their potential, that decision could have cost them a
championship. Let's stop right here because the
what-ifs belong to the losers and not the 2008 PFFL Champion!

Note the final top three in each conference
receive consideration
PFFL: The Downtowners could put up the lowest score of
the year in the entire league and the JR's Boys the highest and the Towners could still win the overall PFFL
Championship. Am I saying that their 165-point lead is insurmountable?
Yes!
EAST:
The current top three will be the final top three but not necessarily
in the current order. Justice has a 55-point lead over third
and a 30-point lead over second. Down 55 it will take a significant effort
from Cleantown to capture the title. They do have a 173-point
week on their resume so it's certainly not out of the question. The
Tommy Guns are down 30 but proved in week 15 they can
easily overcome a 30-point deficit when they put up 133 to Justice's
96. Of course, after the year Justice just had you almost expect a
collapse followed by a frivolous law suit from Dave.
CENTRAL: The Central has four contenders for the top three
spots so someone will be left without a chair when the music stops.
The Syndicate is currently sitting at the head of the table and likely to
claim one of the three prize positions with a 51-point lead over fourth, but
at just 17 ahead of the SS Stoggies and 23 ahead of the
Twisted Helmets, it's not a very comfortable seat. In
fourth the Weekend Warriors are lurking at 51 back and
allthough it will be tough to pass all three, third or second place
are viable at just 28 and 34 points away.
WEST: The Downtowners could allow the JR's
Boys to put in their lineup for them and still win the top spot easily. Even
with no lineup it would take 165 points to catch them, hence my point
of insurmountable.
The Rounder 17 will not be adding a point title to this
year's accomplishments but because they are 75 ahead of fourth they
should be adding some more stipend as it's highly unlikely anyone
finishes in the
top three except the three that are there now. If they would like to
increase their already substantial compensation even more, they will have to beat the JR's
Boys by 54 to take over second. |

PFFL STUFF
●
The Score: The Championship Week was one of the lower scoring
weeks of the year, tying week 7 as the fourth lowest. The East was slightly above
at 117 but the Central's 111 and the West's 114 averaged the league out at
114 for the week. The current yearly average dropped by .2 to 116.4.
● Championship Game Notes: With the Syndicate failing
to win, it is now 17 years and 17 different champions as no team has yet
to win a second Title. The same goes for the Consolation Tournament.
Created in 1996 there have been 13 different winners. . . . The current
scoring system has been in place for 3 years with no changes. This year's
game average was 117.6. Lower than last year's of 139.5 but higher than
2006's 113. . . . The Rounder 17's draft position was 6th
making this the first time ever a team with the 6th pick has won the
championship. Interestingly enough the player they choose with the 6th
pick Frank Gore did not even play because of injury. The
Syndicate also made the championship game with Frank Gore
as their first pick but they chose him in the 9th round. . . . The
Rounders won from the #3 rank, the second time a team with the 3rd
rank has won. . . . The Rounders 126 points was the lowest winning
total since the Playmakers won with 100 points in 2004, and the
lowest winning score in the current scoring system. . . . The Tommy
Guns were the most efficient team of the three with a 94.3 rating,
but even a 100% rating would not have won them the game. . . . A West
Conference team has won the last two championships. In the 13 years of a
head to head title game, an East team has won just 3 times. The Central
and West split with 5 each. For the first 3 of the 13 years there were
only two conferences yet the West has won two more times than the East.
There has been a South conference for 5 of the 13 years but a South team
has never won the title. . . . The Syndicate had the highest scorer
in the game (Cutler 32) but also had the most players under 10
points (4).
● Playoff Tournament: Because New Year's Eve falls on a
Wednesday, this years draft will be held on Tuesday, December 30. The
Playoff Tournament web
site has been updated to 2008 and can be accessed here:
Playoff Tournament. Those interested in participating this year
please contact me at
PFFL Headquarters to reserve
a team.
● Note: The final league meeting will be held on Wednesday,
January 7 at approximately 7:30 pm.

Trivia Answer |
John Riggins |
|
Pittsburgh Steelers RB Franco Harris had set
a record in Super Bowl IX of 158 yards. Washington Redskins RB John
Riggins set the single game rushing record in a Super Bowl with 166 yards
in XVII. The very next year in Super Bowl XVIII, Marcus Allen erased
Riggins' name from the top of the record books with a dazzling 191-yard
performance against Riggins's Redskins. Allen would hold on to the top
spot until Super Bowl XXII. |
