Pittsburgh Survival Football
    Survivor 1:
It was a good opening week for the first contest on two fronts: The 538 entries was the highest ever beating last year's new high of 452 by 86; although it could have been an early massacre, with New England and San Diego pulling out their Monday night games just 27 fatalities were recorded, significantly lower than last year's opening slaughter of 145. Interesting that after that huge opening day loss last year for the second time 8 survivors, the most to ever share the title, still made it to the promise land. Of this week's 27 losers 14 were on Cincinnati. You may be of the opinion that people had no business putting their picks on Cinncy but if you saw the game or the highlights, you would know they lost on a fluke and New England won on one. With a new high of 538 and just 27 fatalities in week one, multiple winners are again a real possibility!

PFFL 2009 Draft

Unlike the last two years that saw LT go #1 in all three drafts, this year had no consensus #1 among the three conferences. There was a consensus however at #2; Matt Forte went second in all three. The Central and West went with the player that probably went first in most drafts in the country, Adrian Peterson. The East went with the player atop most PPR draft lists, Maurice Jones-Drew.
Also unlike last year and actually unlike any year before was the number of receivers drafted in the first round. The West drafted 2 but the East and Central drafted 4 and both had a receiver go with the 5th pick. I can't be sure but I believe that is the highest ever a receiver went in a PFFL draft. And I believe another draft first was the Downtowners choosing the 5th spot after drawing the ace. And you guessed it: they took a receiver! I'd say the era of the running back is definitely over!

The report below was taken from MyFantasyLeague.com's draft-recap reports and the rankings are according to their ADP stats.

Worst Pick Twisted Helmets - Andre Johnson Rd1 Pick 6

Worst Pick B&B - Thomas Jones Rd 3 Pick 6

Note: The MFL Draft Recaps are no longer available at the conference websites but can still be accessed here at the PFFL Home site. The reason they are no longer on the MFL sites is when we changed our roster limits to 19 the MFL software construed this as an unfinished draft and removed the reports; so I moved them here to the PFFL Home.

The PFFL 2009 Constituent

The league again is comprised of 3 conferences of 11 teams each. At 3 teams this year's rookie class is larger than normal; last year there was just 1. The rookies Darryls and Legion of Doom are participating in the East and Smiley's Snipers will compete in the Central. As we know there are no true rookies any more just owners new to the league. For record just 1 rookie team has won a championship; that was the Harmony Hornets in 2005.
We also welcome back 4 former teams returning to the league: TD's, J&J, Archie's (formerly Hazelwood) and Pretty Kitty (formerly DGB). On a side note there was 1 name change since the draft-order sheet was printed. The Crocodiles or Steve Irwin Crocodiles as we knew them last year have changed to Pretty Kitty Central. Welcome and good luck to the rookies and welcome back and good luck to the returning teams!

Acquisitions and Barter
PFFL transactions are now open. Teams may acquire as many as 2 free agents a week and may offer and except trades until the trading deadline. A full explanation of PFFL waivers can be found here in the Free Agency Rules and trading information can be attained in the General Rules. A reminder again for teams putting in for waivers: there are 2 rounds of waivers, in the first round you need only make as many requests as your number in the waiver order. For example: If you are fifth in the waiver order, you need only put in for 5 players to insure you get 1 player.
A reminder for trades: Teams must now vote on any outstanding trades before they will be allowed to put in or change their lineups. Obviously if your lineup is already in it will be valid but if there is a trade posted for vote and you attempt to put in a new lineup or change one, you will be prompted to vote on that trade. Also note there is a new trade feature added for this year that allows owners to define a date in which their trade offer will expire. The default time is 1 week.

PFFL STUFF

The Score:  Week 1 of 2009 was the lowest-scoring opening week in the current scoring system. This is the fourth-straight year where there hasn't been any changes made to the scoring. We enter the year with a three-year average of 117; week 1's 2009 average was 109. The lowest week ever in the current system was 104 in week 5 of 2007.

The No Names:  While the Central and West both had opening week victories over the Average, the East once again struggled. Last year the Central and West conferences were right around .500 against the average but the No Names owned the East with an 8-2-1 record. A reminder that the teams playing against the average each week are playing against that week's average only and their team's score is included in that average.

Live Scoring: Those that follow the games on a computer might want to consider downloading the
MyFantasyLeague.com Game Day program available through the Live Scoring section on the web sites. This is a free download. It is a much more comprehensive program and also much faster with the updates. If you used it last year you must download the new version for this year. It is also a good idea to click on the program and player updates available under the "Options" tab of the program at the start of the games each week.

Two-Peat:  How long will it continue? It still remains through 17 seasons that there hasn't been a team win a second PFFL Championship. Many teams have played in more than one championship game but no one has ever won a second title. Last year the Syndicate came close to not only a second title but back-to-back ones playing in the championship game after winning the '07 title but lost to the Rounders 17.

Site Maintenance: All teams should visit their Franchise Setup section at the conference websites under the Owners tab and select their personal preference options for the year. Also in this section is the listing of each team's email addresses. It is a good idea to check all information for accuracy.

Regular Season: There are ten regular season games remaining.

Welcome: I would like to welcome everyone to the 18th season of the PFFL and thank all who are participating!

PFFL Trivia Answer

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys set a record with 17 consecutive opening victories between 1973-1985. They went to the playoffs in 16 out of 17 of those seasons, only missing the 1984-1985 season during that streak.
