Pittsburgh Survival Football
Survivor 1: Again there was just 1 losing team and again it was you know who! I guess 4 straight losses wasn't enough to scare off 8 diehard Stiller fans. Yeah it was Cleveland but they were on the road and they just lost 4 straight including the likes of KC and Oakland. No complaints as this contest needs all the losses it can get because again there was just one loser and again it wasn't anywhere near the most heavily played. Parity seems officially dead in the NFL as the two heaviest played teams won by a combined score of 95-10. It seems it doesn't matter what teams you already picked but who is playing against Detroit and St. Louis. As long as you still have a team playing one of them your good. The most week 17 survivors ever in Survivor 1 was 8. There are 3 weeks left and there are 86 still picking!
Survivor 2: For the second straight week the only difference between the second contest and the first was the amount of teams chosen and the number survivors. The same as last week there were 6 teams picked in the second contest compared to 8 in the first and just like last week there was just one loser, Pittsburgh! While 8 loyalists perished in contest 1 there was just one diehard fatality here. Usually it's the second contest with the most survivors at this point in the season but this year the second is the lightweight with 46 compared to 86 in the first.

           PFFL POSTSEASON

Week 15 - Conference Championships: This week the 2 surviving teams of the playoffs in each conference play for their individual Conference Championship. Each Conference Championship winner will advance to the PFFL Championship in week 16. The second round playoff losers do not compete in the Consolation Tournament. The third round survivors of the CT compete for their individual Conference Championships in the semifinal round with the winners going on to the CT finals in week 16. All Matchups are determined by rank with the highest rank always playing the lowest rank and the higher rank winning all ties. A detailed breakdown of the seedings, byes, and matchups of the postseason can be found in the Playoff Formats page.

PFFL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

East Second Round Results

#1 Justice 140 - #7 Syndicate 140

There have been other playoff games in the past whose outcomes were determined in the fourth quarter of a Monday night game - in fact four of this week's six games actually were - but none could ever finish as close as the Syndicate-Justice game did... a tie! The Syndicate came into the night down 140-135 but had the Arizona defense in their lineup so as soon as the game kicked off they went up 5. Arizona's DEF scored a couple INTs and a sack but each time San Fran's offense scored it ate away at that opening 10. In the fourth quarter with the Syndicate now leading by just 2, Arizona turned it over on San Fran's side of the field. I could feel Mickey cringe from here! A few plays later a Gore TD took two more points off the Arizona defensive total tying the score at 140. Justice actually never had the lead on Monday night but didn't need to as their #1 ranking meant they win all ties. There were still about 9 minutes left for Arizona's defense to earn something back but it never materialized and now via a tiebreaker win, Justice has a chance to earn their first ever conference title.

#2 TD's 144 - #4 Downtowners 114

This game also wasn't final until Monday night but it didn't start out nearly as close or finish as close as the Justice-TD's showdown. The Towners went in down 135-102 but with Warner and Fitzgerald to go there was nothing scary about a 33 point deficit. What was scary though was the TD's still had Boldin yet to go in their lineup. Still, we've seen it many times where Warner throws for five and three go to Fitzgerald; but as those who saw the game know it wasn't Warner's night meaning it wasn't the Downtowner's night either as the final score of 144-114 would indicate. As a result the TD's now get a chance to play in the conference championship game and a win there would also give them the opportunity to become the only team ever in the PFFL to win a second championship.

#1 Justice

vs.

#2 TD's
29 8-3-0 1846      The classic 1 vs. 2 matchup will be played out in all three conferences as the top two teams in every conference won their games. Getting into the lineups Justice may appear to have a slight edge at QB with Rivers over McNabb mainly because of Vick's propensity to vulture points, but I believe McNabb has the better matchup so we'll wash it.
Skipping the RBs just for now I also see no real gap at WR. Both are more than adequate and both have better than average matchups. I am leaning slightly toward Justice here though because I feel a huge game from Moss after last week's clunker.
The RBs is where this game should be decided however. Justice has a home run hitter in Chris Johnson but that may be all they have this week. Addai is dinged and Indy is already talking about resting players and after those two they really have nothing of note. The TD's on the other hand are loaded at RB and Ray Rice has another sweet matchup. Jones-Drew is at home and throw in Jamaal Charles at home against the Browns and they don't even need to play Forte against BAL.
The site has the TD's an early 1 point favorite but the matchups and circumstances seem to favor the TD's. In their week 5 meeting the TD's prevailed 138-100 and unless Chris Johnson hits multiple homeruns, they look to prevail again.

Central Second Round Results

#1 Reno 141 - #4 Pretty Kitty Central 140

The final score of this game wasn't as close as the Justice-Syndicate game which ended in a tie, but it was as close as it gets without being a tie and it had a much more dramatic finish. Entering Monday night Pretty Kitty had a solid lead of 42 but with nothing going they had nothing to do but watch and wait. Reno on the other hand had two bullets left in their gun in Gore and San Fran's DEF. Throughout the night between Gore's play and Arizona's attempt to break the turnover record, the lead steadily shrunk until the same TD that killed the Syndicate, a Gore score with about 9 minutes left, put the difference in the score to just one. The 1 point lead held up for a while but the San Fran defense was having a great night and needed just 1 more point to give Reno the win. Very late in the game with Pretty Kitty still leading by that 1 point, Arizona had the ball with probably their last possession of the game. An Arizona score would take points away from Reno but a San Fran defensive anything would give Reno the win. Then the inevitable: Boldin catches a pass; fumbles; SF recovers; 1 point for Reno; the score is now tied and Reno wins a tie via the higher rank tiebreaker. Then the inevitable: an immediate call from Marty where I had to endure his ranting of their being no God and... well you know the rest. But his biggest complaint was he lost by a tie, a lousy tie; but were they really tied? Earlier San Fran blocked an extra point attempt by Arizona which had actually given Reno another point; but plays of this sort are not immediately displayed so in reality Marty had actually lost about 15 or 20 minutes earlier but just didn't know it. I guess I would have just gotten that call about 15 or 20 minutes earlier anyhow. Reno now has a chance for their first conference title in just their second year.

#2 SS Stoggies 176 - #3 TnT 120

No drama of any kind here as the Stoggies scored early and often crushing TnT 176-120. TnT didn't do too much here but it probably wouldn't have mattered if they did as the Stoggies just simply went off with not just their best score of the year, but actually the best score in the Central Conference for the year. Yeah Marshall's 53 was big and the reason for the inflated score but even if he put up a zero the Stoggies still win by 3. Although they have won point championships in the past, this will be the Stoggies shot at their first conference title.

#1 Reno

vs.

#2 SS Stoggies
30 8-3-0 1772      As always we'll start at the QB position and although Favre has been a pleasant surprise this year, the Stoggies get the nod with Brees.
Gore's reemergence on Monday night would seem encouraging for Reno but with SF in Philadelphia this week I don't expect the same production. Add in DeAngelo Williams is playing against the best running defense in Minnesota and Reno is looking just average at best at RB. The Stoggies don't look great either with Ricky Williams at Tennessee but here it is again, another great matchup for Ray Rice at home against the Bears. That alone gives the RB edge to the Stoggies.
Even though the Stoggies have Brandon Marshall who put up 53 points last week, Reno makes up a lot of ground with the WR position led by Welker and 85. The Stoggies next best receiver after Marshall has far fewer points than Reno's fourth receiver. Add in that Marshall is playing a team known for defending against the pass in Oakland and Marshall's production should come back to normal giving a significant edge to Reno.
The site has Reno an early 9 point favorite but the Stoggies won their week 7 game 143-120 and there are factors the site isn't taking into consideration: Like the Stoggies have been red hot lately with a 160 point average in the postseason and Ray Rice has another great matchup. Reno can win if their receivers step up but if Rice has another huge game the Stoggies will be hard to beat.

West Second Round Results

#1 MNE 103 - #5 Irish Talbots 96

It's not very often you can win a game with your worst score of the year but MNE did just that. They entered Monday night with a paltry 103 points and no players left but also a 10 point lead. The Talbots hopes were all on one Tim Hightower. You can say the Talbots fumbled away their chance to play for the conference title in two ways: One because of a 61.5% efficiency rating that left a potential of 60 more points on the bench, and two an actual fumble that Hightower lost in the first quarter that had him pulled from the game in favor of Chris Wells, systematically killing their chances for the come from behind win. The Talbots loss give MNE their first playoff game win in their 3 year history. Last year they lost their wildcard game and in 2007 they earned a bye but lost in the first round. This year their #1 rank allowed them to bypass their previous obstacles giving them a chance at another first, a conference championship.

#2 Knockout Kings 216 - #3 Archie's 140

The Kings took no prisoners in a record-breaking lopsided win that advances them to the conference finals. They are just the third team to break the 200 barrier and smashed the previous record by 12 points. This is their third appearance in the playoffs and the deepest they have gotten. Coming in second for the week and still losing by 76 Archie's must not only feel snake bit, but more like they fell into a snake pit. How do you come in second for the week and lose by 76?! If this were the regular season they would have at least gotten 2VP.

#1 MNE

vs.

#2 Knockout Kings
32 8-3-0 1820      If these two teams would have matched up last week the Kings would have won by 113. I still think MNE is showing up this week so lets get into it: Although Schaub has been solid this year Brees is the man so we'll give the first point to MNE for QB. From here on out however things seem to be favoring the Kings.
The Kings probably have the best 1-2 punch at RB in AP and Rice; and Rice has another fantastic matchup this week. MNE has a stud in Jones-Drew but things fall apart after that. They lost Kevin Smith for the year and LeSean McCoy has been average at best. They could make up some ground if they choose to use Chris Wells as he has a great matchup with Detroit but Hightower is still in the picture so he's no sure thing. Clear advantage to the Kings here.
At WR MNE has another stud in Welker but again after him is very little. Sims-Walker has done nothing in three weeks, Burleson is out this week and after that it's four TEs none with near the points of even the Kings fourth receiver. Another clear advantage to the Kings.
In the final game of the year MNE knocked the Kings out of first with a convincing 170-122 win. Since then however MNE has averaged a mere 111 while the Kings postseason average is a whopping 158. The Kings would have won every game after that week 11 loss. The site has installed the Kings as a 13 point favorite. Ray Rice's matchup alone warrants that spread!

PFFL STUFF

The Score: We didn't get a sixth straight week of 120 plus scoring but we did get a sixth straight week of above average scoring. The prior most consecutive weeks of above average scoring was 4 in 2007. Week 14's 119.3 raises the yearly average for the sixth straight week to its highest level of the year, 118.8; but it is still 1.3 short of 2007's final record high of 120.1. It will be hard to overtake that mark with just three weeks remaining but if teams keep breaking the 200 barrier you never know. The current postseason average of weeks 12 thru 14 is 120.2.

Apex: Before Justice scored 204 points in week 10 of this year, the Sharks 202 in week 6 of 2007 was not only the highest score in the four years of the current scoring system, but the only time the 200 barrier was ever breached. To say the Knockout Kings breached the barrier would be an understatement. Their 216 points not only beat both previous records, but it also beat the potential points of 208 and 214 that Justice and the Sharks respectively had when they broke the record. A 100% effort by the Kings would have produced 230. The fact that they did it in a playoff game makes it that much sweeter for the Kings.

Playoff Tournament: There are still three weeks remaining in the PFFL season but here is a reminder that we do conduct another draft for the NFL Playoffs. There is a 24 team ceiling for this contest.
The structure of the contest is determined by the number of teams participating so I would appreciate teams interested in reserving a spot do so at their earliest convenience.

                                            Did You Know Stuff

● The second round of the playoffs was unkind to former champions. There were four previous champions competing in week 14; going into week 15 that number is now down to just one: The TD's. The odds of a team winning a second PFFL Championship are now down to 1 in 6. The TD's can claim the first PFFL title of the 21st century winning their championship in 2000 and now are the only team remaining in the playoffs with a chance to be the first repeat winner in the 18 years of the league.

● This postseason hasn't been without its share of drama. This week alone there was a tie and a one-point game in the playoffs. Overall in the postseason including the CT there have been two ties, one one-point game and one three-point game. There were just two ties in the entire regular season.

There is not one team remaining in the playoffs ranked lower than 2. The #1 and #2 ranked teams in every conference won their round 2 game making every conference championship matchup a 1 vs. 2.

The fewest points scored by both teams in an entire half of a Super Bowl is 2. The Pittsburgh Steelers sacked Fran Tarkenton in the end zone during the first half of Super Bowl IX for the only points of the first half. Pittsburgh won their first Super Bowl that day 16-6.

Good Luck to the remaining 6 Teams of the 2009 PFFL Playoffs!
