Pittsburgh Survival Football
Survivor 1: Previously the most survivors to make it through week 17 was 8. This year a record breaking 21 managed to it; and if it wasn't for Denver losing twice in the final three weeks, it could have been 78! There were 86 entries making picks going into week 15; Denver was responsible for the demise of 46 in week 15 and 11 more the final week. Had Denver not lost those two games, the Survivor 2 record of 70 survivors last year would have been broken. Not only was there a record number of survivors in the first contest this year but a record number of entries also with 535 picking in week 1. There are too many to mention so I will just say congratulations to the 21 co-champions of the 2009 Pittsburgh Survival Football Contest!
Survivor 2: With a one week earlier start up and about 50 less entries than last year, for the first time the second contest finished with less survivors than the first. The numbers were a little less but like the first contest Denver's two losses in the final three weeks made all the difference in the value of the final shares. Denver's toll here was 28 compared to 57 in the first contest over the last three weeks but there were 46 going into week 15 compared to 86 in the first. Like the first contest there are too many to mention so again I will just say congratulations to the 13 co-champions of the 2009 Pittsburgh Survival 2 Contest!

Note the final top three in each conference receive consideration

PFFL: With the lead the Knockout Kings had going into the final week the outcome was really predetermined, but what wasn't determined was the margin of victory. The record was 180 set in 2006 and the Kings entered the week with a 151 point lead over the nearest competitor. The way they were scoring points you almost expected them to set a new high but what stopped them most likely was week 17 itself. With a 97 point average it was the lowest scoring week of the current four-year scoring system. Their 109 points actually cut their final margin to 137 but a testament to how good a season they actually had that was still good enough for the third highest margin of victory in PFFL history.

EAST: In the lowest scoring week of the past four years Justice's 123 points was more than enough to hold off all comers; earning them their third East Conference Point Title and second in as many years. They earned their first in 2004 and now back to back in '08 and '09. They finish with the #2 overall league point rank second only to the Knockout Kings. They have yet to win a league title but three conference point titles is still more success than most!

CENTRAL: A first place weekly finish made absolutely sure the SS Stoggies would not be overtaken for the Central Title. They entered the week with a 30 point cushion and although 120 points doesn't sound insurmountable, it was the high in the Central in a very low scoring week. Like Justice this is also their third Conference Point Title but unlike Justice all were won in the Central and their two previous victories in '98 and '05 were also League Point Titles.

WEST: Unlike the three-timers in the East and the Central, this was the Knockout Kings first point title. And also unlike the East and Central, this one was over before the week started. While their 182 point margin over the second place team in the West was definitely a blowout, it wasn't a record. That's reserved for the 335 point conference margin of victory in the 2006 South Conference by the Imitators South.

* 2009 PFFL MVP Award Winner

In a way I'm glad Chris Johnson fell two points shy of the overall player point lead to reiterate that it's not just the player with the most points who wins the MVP award. You could make a case for others but instead I'm going to just give the case for Johnson. The point gap between him and the next RB is 67, twice as much as the difference in the top two QBs and almost three times as much as the difference in the top two WRs. The draft value was fantastic as there were 7 backs picked in front of him in two of the conferences and 11 in the third. He scored 30 or more points six times, twice as many times as the next closest player Aaron Rodgers who did it three times. He broke the single game scoring record for players with 55 in week 2. Every team that had him finished in the top three in points in their respective conferences. He rushed for over 2000 yards and had over 500 receiving yards. He had a 62-yard touchdown run called back in the final week on a very controversial holding call that had no bearing on the play that would have given him the second-highest rushing total in NFL history and a decisive lead for overall points. And he's really fast! Chris Johnson is the PFFL 2009 MVP!

The  PFFL's  2009  GOOD,  BAD,  and the UGLY...

Eastwood The Good: The Knockout Kings hitting the trifecta winning the League Championship, the Point Championship and the Weekly Winnings leader! They also broke the weekly high record with 216 points in week 14 and finish the year with the second highest winnings total of all time . . . The SS Stoggies playing in their first championship game and winning their third conference point title and finishing second in total winnings. . . TD's winning their second conference title and finishing second in the championship game and third in total winnings . . . Justice winning their third conference point title and second straight and they dropped all Civil Action against the league . . . Archie's winning the Coach of the Year Award to go along with a very successful season . . . After a loss in the first round of the playoffs Cleantown going on to win the Consolation Tournament and consequently ending up with a winning season . . . Successful seasons by MNE, Reno and TnT . . . Chris Johnson and Brandon Marshall's monster 50+ scoring weeks . . . The JR's Boys and B&B picking 17 winners to earn a piece of the pie in the 2009 Pittsburgh Survivor Contest as one of the 21 co-champions . . . Cleantown, TnT, and MNE's 6-game regular season win streaks, longest in the league this year . . . Knockout Kings, MNE and Archie's for winning two Team of the Week Honors each . . . The Knockout Kings taking a weekly first including a record breaking Team of the Week Honor in all three of their postseason victories . . . The SS Stoggies taking three straight weekly firsts in weeks 12-14 . . . The PFFL's 18th season!!!

The Good, the Bad and the UglyThe Bad: The Syndicate losing a second round playoff game by the tie breaker and Pretty Kitty Central losing by 1 in the same round . . . Smiley's Snipers finishing third in conference points but earning just the 10th rank and missing the playoffs partially because they had the most points scored against them . . . Little Johnny's missing out on the playoffs in the Central because of a missed field goal on Monday night in week 11 . . . Pretty Kitty West's decision to play Roy Williams over Terrell Owens in week 11 causing them to miss the playoffs . . . Not just bad but very bad Commish East's decision to draft Forte over AP and Commish West's decision to draft Stephen Jackson over Chris Johnson . . . Marty getting the best of you in a trade . . .  The T Bones icon . . . Indianapolis' decision to not try for the perfect season . . . Kevin voting no on almost every trade in all three conferences . . . Taking Denver the last week of Survivor.

The Good, the Bad and the UglyThe UGLY.: Weekend Warriors finishing the season with 7 straight losses . . . Commish West finishing 33 out of 33 in league points 668 points back of the leader . . . Commish West's side bet with that leader . . . Commish West's side bets with everyone . . . You can throw in Commish East's as well . . . Aggravators coming in last in the East three straight weeks in weeks 3-5 . . . The Darrly's final roster: 2 QBs, 3 RBs, 11 WRs, 1 K, 3 DEFs . . . The Legion of Doom & the Weekend Warriors icons . . . The Central Conference scoring average in week 17, 92 . . . The Darryl's and Boys of Autumn postseason scoring averages of 84 and 91 respectively, the only two postseason averages under 100 . . .   Politics - can it get any uglier!

PFFL FINAL STUFF

The Final Score: And that's why fantasy leagues have their championships in week 16 and not 17. After eight straight weeks of an average around 120 points, the bottom didn't just drop out in the final week, it crashed and burned at 96.7. For the first time in the four years of the current scoring system, a week averaged below 100! It was so low it was 12.5 points lower than the previous low week of the year 109.3 in week 1. It was so low it set a new record, the previous record low was 104.3 in week 5 of 2007. It was so low Commish East won the week!!! Going into the week the yearly average was steadily rising and crested at 119.1 after week 16; after week 17 2009 finishes with a 117.8 average. The year still finished higher than the three-year average of 117.3 coming into the year. The new four-year average is now 117.4.
The West can claim the league champion but the East can claim best conference with a 118.9 average. In fact the West actually finishes last in points as the Central finishes second at 117.8 and the West brings up the rear with 116.8.

● Every team finished in the 80 percentile in coaching efficiency. Archie's was high with 89.0, Irish Talbots were low with 80.1.
Two records were broken this year: The high week
held by the Shark's 202 in week 6 of 2007 was actually broken twice; first by Justice's 204 points in week 10 then by the current record holder the Knockout Kings 216 in week 14. And another 2007 record also fell twice: Kevin Curtis' 51 points in 2007 was breached by Brandon Marshall's 53 in week 14 and by the new record holder Chris Johnson and his 55 in week 2.
The Irish Talbots finished dead even on the year. Their total winnings equaled the franchise fee.
For the first time in postseason play a game was decided by the second tie breaker. In the Consolation Tournament final J&J and Cleantown were tied in both score and rank. The game was decided by the game's potential points which gave Cleantown the victory.
Little Johnny's posted a 6 in the Coulda Column most in the league, meaning they could have had 6 more wins than they did. J&J's 6 was the highest number in the Woulda Lost Column. Every team had at least 1 Coulda won and 1 Woulda lost.
Irish Talbots had the most bench points 1626, B&B had the least 858.
The lowest score of the year was posted by the Boys of Autumn, a 56 in week 14.
Smiley's Snipers gets the dubious honor of team with the most points (1405) scored against. While were at it honorable mention goes to the Weekend Warriors (1404) and IC Lightning (1400).
Chuck Howley was the first player to be named the Super Bowl MVP despite being on the losing team. Howley intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble in Super Bowl V, despite Dallas losing to Baltimore 16-13.

In Closing: The PFFL began in the last decade of the 20th century and its 18th season closes the first decade of the 21st century. Your suggestions and opinions have been the rationality behind most of the changes that have occurred over those 18 years and will continue to be for any future modifications. I believe there are still many opportunities to improve the league so I welcome your input over the upcoming off season. As always I would like to thank all that participated this year, in past years, and thank in advance all those that will continue to join us in the future. I wish you all good health and good luck in the next decade!
