Pittsburgh Survival Football
Survivor 1: The disaster that was avoided in week one materialized in week two. Green Bay, one of three possible default picks, went down taking with it 105 souls while Tennessee took another 72. A mega disaster was avoided when another default pick and the most heavily played game on the board Washington with 152 picks, barely won their game despite not scoring a touchdown. Had they gone down also that would have given the week a total loss of 339. There were just as many losing teams picked as winners, 7 each. Those allowing the default picker to choose for them were lucky the site picked Minnesota and not Green Bay. Why Minnesota and not Green Bay? I don't really know but the site calls it a random pick when there are two or more high spreads tied. There were some people removed from the contest at their request stating they entered inadvertently so the current pool total is now 535 but just 321 are moving on to week three!

Comments

7 2-0-0 Good News Best start in their 3 year history in the league - unlucky to have just 1 weekly second to show for it but are tied for second in overall league points
Pts 282 Bad News I don't know - the economy maybe
Pretty Kitty West 7 2-0-0 Good News As the former DGB team they go back to 2002 and this is actually their best start ever. They won the championship as DGB in 2002 but never before opened the season 2-0
Pts 261 Bad News Great start but do have some injury concerns starting to develop
Archie's 5 1-1-0 Good News Not being able to make the draft in time - why - because Marty took Chris Johnson for him with his 10th pick - welcome back Archibald
Pts 282 Bad News Marty will probably remind him of it all year
MNE 5 1-1-0 Good News This is their 3rd year in the league and the third time they start the season 2-0 - Will the third time be the charm?
Pts 248 Bad News Actually this is their worst start of the three, the previous two years they opened in first and second respectively - but can you really call fourth bad news

Irish Talbots 4 1-1-0 Good News They're consistent at least - this is their fifth year in the league and the fifth time they open the year 1-1
Pts 247 Bad News With Hasselbeck hurt they are suspect at QB - and they'll probably use this as another excuse to get drunk
Rounder 17 4 1-1-0 Good News They're the defending champions
Pts 239 Bad News First time they open the season out of the top tier
French River 4 1-1-0 Good News After opening the previous two years 0-2, 1-1 looks good
Pts 233 Bad News Got beat in week 1 to their counterparts Irish Talbots 153-100
B&B 4 1-1-0 Good News For their third straight year in the league they open with at least 1 win and they have the highest current coaching rating in the league 93.9
Pts 216 Bad News Scored just 74 points this week and a 100% rating would only have gotten them 87

J&J 3 1-1-0 Good News They are back in the league after a 1 year hiatus
Pts 203 Bad News They have never started 0-2 but this is the first time they start in the bottom tier
Commish West 3 1-1-0 Good News Looked to go 0-2 but pulled one out of the hat on Monday night winning 97-94 when Ronnie Brown outscored Reggie Wayne 25-6
Pts 189 Bad News Key players off to a slow start causing a low point total
Brookline 0 0-2-0 Good News They had the potential to win both games
Pts 157 Bad News Their worst start since 2004 - they are dead last in points, one of only two teams with 0 VP, and have the lowest coaching rating in the league of 61.8 and that's mainly the reason they are 0-2

PFFL STUFF

The Score: Week 2 saw an 11-point increase in scoring over the opening week. At 120 points it was not only well above last week's 109 but also above average as the league's opening day average was 117. Maybe teams just aren't ready to play but for the fourth-straight year the opening week has been basically low scoring while week 2 has increased dramatically. This year's current average, which is basically just a two-week average, now stands at 115.

The Record Book: While no records of note were broken last year, it didn't take long this year for one to tumble. Just two weeks in and we have a new record for the highest single week by a player. Chris Johnson's 55 toped Kevin Curtis's 51 in week 3 of 2007. Including myself, I know there are many out there kicking themselves for passing on him in the first round; except for Archie's that is. They were the only ones to not let him escape the first round. Smiley's Snipers got the best value getting him with the 7th pick of the second round.

Did You Know Stuff: Even with Chris Johnson's 55-point week, Drew Brees still leads the league in points. . . . Byron Leftwich is currently ahead of Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner and Aaron Rodgers in points. . . . I know this is supposed to be the Era of the receiver, but the top ten in scoring currently consists of 5 RBs, 4 QBs, and 1 un-drafted receiver named Mario Manningham. . . .  Brookline had a coaching rating of just 53.0 in week 1 losing their game 109-71; their potential points were 134. . . .  Did you Know you could get a penalty regarding the coin toss? It is a 15 yard penalty and loss of coin toss option if the team is late to the game or if the captains don't appear for the toss.

Power Rankings: I had an inquiry recently about the Power Rankings and how they are determined. Anyone interested in knowing how these complex calculations are derived please come to the Steak Co. no later than 8:30 pm this Wednesday night. You must bring with you a graphing calculator, a slide rule, three legal pads - white preferred - a protractor, have a working knowledge of algorithms and a pocket protector containing at least two pens and one #2 pencil. Or you could just click on the help link at the top of your MFL site page and type in Power Rankings in the search box. Scroll down a bit and you will see the formula.

Regular Season: There are nine regular season games remaining.
