Pittsburgh Survival Football
Survivor 1: It was a relatively quiet week for the first contest: Of the 14 different teams chosen to win just three lost taking down just eight entries. The Texans were responsible for four, Pittsburgh three and Washington one. Early on Dallas's 56 entries looked to be in jeopardy Monday night but the cowboys rallied saving the contest from another significant hit. Baltimore was the hot play with 151 picks but were never challenged. As usual the second contest will start in week 6 but a twist will be added this year: In response to last year's 70 co-winners the second contest will continue through the NFL playoffs if necessary. The first contest will end on week 17 as usual regardless of how many survive but in lieu of the growing amount of contestants each year, next year the playoffs may also be added to the first contest. Week 4 will see 313 entries making a pick.
Survivor 2: The second contest starts in Week 6.

9 2-1-0 Good News Three weeks in show three different leaders in the East but after an easy win this week the Lightning are what counts the most, the current leader - and points aren't bad either at 2nd in conference and 5th overall
Pts 380 Bad News Vincent I wish I could say it was all good again but injuries to Bell and Kevin Smith could leave them very thin at RB and no weekly winnings yet
T Bones 8 2-1-0 Good News Would be 3-0 had Frank Gore not got hurt early but still lead the conference in points 2nd overall and still in the top two
Pts 395 Bad News Gore out for a few games and they don't have his backup - and there is still Dean
Downtowners 7 2-1-0 Good News Lost a tough one 122-118 but they only drop one position and stay in the top tier - points still very good at 3rd and 7th overall
Pts 372 Bad News Probably would be 3-0 had Welker played and Welker questionable for week 4
Syndicate 7 2-1-0 Good News Gore getting hurt key to them beating the T Bones 121-110 and the win allow them to maintain their top tier status
Pts 368 Bad News It's been reported a very suspicious large amount of Ritalin showed up in Gore's drug test

Middle Tier

Commish East 7 2-1-0 Good News After starting the season in dead last won two in a row to not only get out of the bottom tier but now challenging the top
Pts 307 Bad News Very low point total leaving no margin for error to stay above the cut line - and now there's this Ritalin thing to deal with
Justice 6 2-1-0 Good News Also riding a two-game win streak lifting them out of the bottom tier and into contention
Pts 347 Bad News All those lawyer jokes
TD's 6 1-2-0 Good News MJD justifying them taking him #1 and contributing to a huge 4VP first win of the season that lifts them out of the doldrums
Pts 350 Bad News Losing their first two games have them playing catch up
Darrlys 6 1-2-0 Good News After starting the year 0-2 broke out in a big way with a 4VP win taking them out of the shadows and into the light - and sweetening the pot they took a weekly first while beating their fellow rookies
Pts 339 Bad News They are still just one loss away from going back into the darkness

Bottom Tier

Legion of Doom 5 1-2-0 Good News Earned a VP in the loss - Aaron Rodgers starting to come on
Pts 349 Bad News Devastating loss taking them from 1 game out of the top tier to 1 game into the bottom - playing without your #1 pick (LT) is just hard to overcome
Aggravators 4 1-2-0 Good News Drew Brees getting just 8 points a fluke you can attribute to the bad weather conditions
Pts 286 Bad News A 60.7% coaching rating for the game and 1 point out of your entire receiving corps is just ugly
Twisted Helmets 1 0-3-0 Good News Willie Parker coming to life
Pts 331 Bad News Have most points scored against them in the conference contributing to their situation of just 1 VP and no wins in three games

PFFL CENTRAL

Top Tier

JR-s Boys VP W-L-T

Comments

9 3-0-0 Good News Sitting atop the Central tied for the most VP (9) in the league and the only undefeated team remaining in the league - it's all good right?
Pts 321 Bad News Sometimes all is not what it appears: they actually had the second worst score of the week in the conference but played the team with the worst score earning them a rare 2VP win - they are just 9th in conference points 25th overall and the stats show they coulda lost all three games but the reason they probably didn't was they have the least amount of points scored against them in the league - sorry for putting a damper on your success John, just trying to make your competitors feel a little better about themselves
Cleantown 8 2-1-0 Good News Dateline Monday Night: less than a minute to go in the final game of the week and Cleantown is down 1 point in their game with TnT but have the Dallas Def on the field; TnT is poised to not only win the game but win Team of the Week Honors; it's 4th down for Carolina and an incomplete pass would end the game and give Cleantown a loss, 2 less VP, and they would end up in 7th place. A sack, fumble recovery or Int would give them a tie at least to salvage a spit with TnT for all at stake. I didn't even know this was possible but Delhomme gets hit, fumbles, Dallas recovers and they award both a sack and a fumble recovery on the play giving Cleantown 2 more points, 2 more VP, a win instead of a loss or a tie, and even Team of the Week Honors instead of just a weekly second - they should at least buy TnT a drink on Wednesday I would think
Pts 321 Bad News After that win are you kidding
SS Stoggies 8 2-1-0 Good News Despite just 8 points from Brees, they squeaked by Pretty Kitty 115-113 improving their top tier position by 1 from fourth to third - so far they have resided in the top tier through the first three games
Pts 341 Bad News LT issue still lingering
Reno 7 2-1-0 Good News Despite scoring just 65 points they remain in the top tier - testament to how good their first two weeks were
Pts 333 Bad News Losing Gore for a while and Welker still on the injured list as questionable

Middle Tier

Nasty Aggravators 7 2-1-0 Good News Peyton Manning looking every bit as good as Drew Brees and gotten 1 full round later
Pts 321 Bad News Very shallow at WR
TnT 6 1-2-0 Good News Best 1-2 team out there - 2 more points or 2 less from their opponent this week and would be in third right now
Pts 357 Bad News Endured a devastating last minute loss - scored the second most points in the entire league for the week but didn't even get a win or even a weekly first
Pretty Kitty Central 6 1-2-0 Good News Lost their last two but still above the cut line, have a weekly first, and points above average just 48 behind the conference leader
Pts 334 Bad News Tom Brady not looking worth the second round pick they invested in him
Smiley's Snipers 5 1-2-0 Good News Total points very solid 2nd in conference and 10th overall
Pts 361 Bad News Not being rewarded for those points at 1-2, 8th place and no weekly winnings

Bottom Tier

Weekend Warriors 5 1-2-0 Good News Stats are better than their position and if Felix Jones doesn't get hurt their position would be much better
Pts 327 Bad News Felix Jones and Westbrook injury issues
Boys of Autumn 4 1-2-0 Good News No longer winless and no longer in the cellar
Pts 308 Bad News Points still in cellar last in conference 29th overall
Little Johnny's 2 0-3-0 Good News Have the players they've just been underachieving
Pts 315 Bad News Underachieving players have them in the cellar

Comments

9 2-1-0 Good News Leading in 4 of the 5 leader board categories including the most important of total points and weekly winnings and tied for most VP in the league with 9 - and Archie is a really nice guy
Pts 416 Bad News This weather sucks
Knockout Kings 8 2-1-0 Good News Second only to Archie's in points, VP, and remain in the top two even with a loss this week
Pts 382 Bad News Decision to leave DeSean Jackson on the bench cost them their undefeated and first place status
Irish Talbots 8 2-1-0 Good News Left a pile of points on the bench but still won their game lifting them back into the top tier and just behind the top two in points
Pts 376 Bad News Getting by for now but with Hasselbeck out QB position very thin
Rounder 17 8 2-1-0 Good News Break into the top tier for the first time this year - got the best value for Peyton Manning in the fourth round while others paid 3rd and even 2nd round price
Pts 359 Bad News Don't really have a stud RB

Middle Tier

French River 7 2-1-0 Good News Won their last two improving in the standings each week and McNabb due back soon
Pts 345 Bad News Harvey has petitioned the league to reinstate him as Kevin's partner
Pretty Kitty West 7 2-1-0 Good News Archie is very grateful to them for picking Chris Johnson for him with his first pick when he was late getting to the draft
Pts 331 Bad News They fell from 2nd to 6th when Archie beat them this week 134-70
J&J 6 2-1-0 Good News After spending the first two weeks in the bottom tier finally break out
Pts 313 Bad News Over 100 points behind the conference leader through just 3 weeks
MNE 6 1-2-0 Good News Drew Brees probably won't have another game this bad
Pts 367 Bad News In their 3 years in the league this is the lowest they have ever been in the standings

Bottom Tier

B&B 4 1-2-0 Good News They lead the league in coaching efficiency at 91.0% and are the only team in the league with a rating in the 90 percentile
Pts 313 Bad News LT still on the sidelines
Commish West 4 1-2-0 Good News Next to last in conference points and 31st overall in the league but as commissioner have the power to alter the scores and the standings in their favor
Pts 292 Bad News Don't really believe they can get away with it
Brookline 0 0-3-0 Good News Have the players to turn this around
Pts 252 Bad News There's time but already 6VP from a wildcard

PFFL STUFF

The Score: The scoring wasn't as bad as week 1 but it was significantly lower than last week. The three conferences averaged just 112, well below the opening average of 117, and below the now current three-week average of 114. The byes begin in the upcoming week but the stats do not support a correlation between them and the average. You would think with less players available the average would naturally be lower but there never seems to be a clear pattern indicating that. I would believe the matchups have more of an impact on the scoring than the byes.

NFL/PFFL History: There are only two NFL charter-member teams still in existence today: the Bears and the Cardinals. There are three PFFL teams who have participated in all 18 years of the leagues existence: Commish, (original name Phil) T Bones (original name Richie & Dean) TnT (original name Tom). The Packers is the oldest team name that is still in use in the National Football League.

                                           Did You Know Stuff

● There is just one undefeated team remaining after three weeks of the season, the JR's Boys. This is the least amount of undefeated teams this early in the season since head to head competition was introduced in 1995. Has true parity reached the PFFL?
● There was 1 one-point game and 2 two-point games in the Central this week. Last year it was the East with all the tight games; this year it's the Cardiac Central supplying the drama with a total of 1 one-point game, 3 two-point games, 2 three-point games, and 1 four-point game through the first three weeks.
● Posting a record of just 1-2 B&B's league-high efficiency rating is not correlating into wins. The good news is the coach is doing a good job; the bad news is the players aren't.
● The Boys of Autumn have the abdicable honor of being the current team with the most points scored against them. It's admirable that they even have one win with 404 points in the PA column.
● The Indianapolis Colts were the first NFL team to have cheerleaders.

Corrections: It was stated in last week's newsletter that MNE had started the year 2-0 for the third straight year but in fact started this year at 1-1. Our editor has been properly rebuked.

Regular Season: There are eight regular season games remaining.
