Pittsburgh Survival Football
Survivor 1: Another relatively quiet week for the first contest. Two of the eight teams picked to win lost but only nine individuals perished on the two. Believe it or not Buffalo again was involved taking down six of the nine. I can see it as it was Cleveland they played and they were at home but after the beating they took in Miami last week... But if you were ever going to take Buffalo it did seem this was the week. Three more were lost with Baltimore at home against Cincinnati. You have to now say the Bengals are for real. The only real drama with the more heavily played games came with Dallas in KC; but they pulled it out in OT saving 21 from extinction. Bottom line 303 are moving on to Week Six.
Survivor 2: The second contest is set to start this weekend, Week six of the NFL -  a second chance for the 232 victims of Survivor 1 so far.

Comments

17 4-1-0 Good News Third straight week atop the East; All four of their wins have been 4VP wins giving them the most VP in the league, 4VP ahead of second and 7VP ahead of the middle tier; has two of the three non QB players with more than 100 points; have a 38 point lead in conference points second overall; have no injury or bye problems this week and the early line has them a 25 point favorite over the T Bones - but is it really all good?
Pts 666 Bad News Had Mike Sims-Walker in their lineup and he didn't even play; played Josh Scobee and Jacksonville got shut out; won 147-110 but could have scored 167; lost a game in week two - yeah Sims-Walker was announced as out after kickoff and am I nit picking with this bad news stuff, absolutely, but just look at their point total (666) - Vincent, is your soul really worth a fantasy football championship?
TD's 13 3-2-0 Good News Three game win streak has risen them to elite status in the East; third in conference points a solid 6th overall; coulda-woulda column says they could be 5-0; McNabb is back - early line has them favored 31 over the Legion of Doom
Pts 621 Bad News They took the 31
Downtowners 12 3-2-0 Good News Broke a two-game losing streak with a big 4VP win vaulting them back into the top tier; had a 100% coaching rating this week bringing their rating up to 90.4, second in the league and just one of two teams over 90%; have not one player either injured or on a bye this week - Ron chose not to write his own comments this week
Pts 628 Bad News no weekly winnings yet
Commish East 11 3-1-1 Good News Despite having the lowest point total for the week they salvage a tie to remain in the top tier
Pts 513 Bad News Enigmas only last so long

Middle Tier

Justice 10 3-2-0 Good News Left some points on the bench but their best lineup wouldn't have won them their game so no blame no shame
Pts 584 Bad News The loss did some damage though: drops them from the top two to this middle tier
T Bones

10 2-3-0 Good News Ritchie learned a valuable lesson: thou shall not wait until the last minute to put in your lineup
Pts 614 Bad News Not changing their lineup in time and leaving in a dead player cost them a two-point loss to the average, gave them 2 less VP, and leaves them in the middle tier instead of the top  - and now Ritchie has to hear it from you know who!
Syndicate

9 2-3-0 Good News Had it handed to them by the Twisted Helmets 161-110 but did earn 1VP in the loss and lost only 1 position in the standings - not one irrational message board post this year meaning either the move to the East has done Mickey good or we finally found the right dosage
Pts 610 Bad News Manning and Wayne off this week
Darrlys 9 2-3-0 Good News No shame in losing to the best team in the East (IC Lightning) 147-110 and lost no ground in the loss staying out of the bottom tier
Pts 120 Bad News On hearing that there were other attorneys in the East, Justice has filed a Writ of Habeas Corpus claiming the East is their jurisdiction and demand the Darrlys immediate relocation to the the Central or West

Bottom Tier

Legion of Doom 7 1-4-0 Good News Won a VP in the loss; according to the Power Rankings could have won two of their four losses; have a weekly first to their credit
Pts 555 Bad News Lost three in a row and have been stuck in the bottom tier three weeks in a row
Aggravators 5 1-3-1 Good News Had the lowest score in the East this week and didn't lose
Pts 452 Bad News Didn't win either (tied) but would have won if Braylon Edwards didn't get traded to the Jets - went into Monday night down one point and Cotchery got them just one point because Edwards got all the attention
Twisted Helmets 5 1-4-0 Good News Won their first game in a big way scoring 161 points and taking a conference weekly first
Pts 579 Bad News Still in the East basement

PFFL CENTRAL

Top Tier

Cleantown VP W-L-T

Comments

14 4-1-0 Good News Have now won four in a row, have the longest winning streak in the league; their latest win over the average gives them back to back weeks on the Central throne and are the only team in the Central to hold the top spot for more than a week; have McNabb back healthy and his bye behind him; Kevin gets to drink all he wants and it's ok because he's Irish
Pts 611 Bad News Last week they had no bad news and won again this week so what do you think?
JR-s Boys 13 4-1-0 Good News Recovered nicely from their only loss of the year last week with a big 4VP win recording their highest week of the year of 149 points and also recording their first weekly winnings with a conference second; have been in the top tier all five weeks and in the top two three of five - play Cleantown this week so opportunity there for top spot
Pts 562 Bad News Big point week helped but points still on the light side for a top two team; Reggie Wayne on a bye this week
TnT

12 3-2-0 Good News Break into the top tier for the first time and maybe the most underrated team in the Central scoring 169 points with three starters on a bye; if it wasn't for a last second 1 point loss in week three and an Anthony Gonzalez injury in week one, would be undefeated and in first place; lead the conference in points 5th overall
Pts 627 Bad News Little Tommy will no doubt take all the credit
Boys of Autumn 12 3-2-0 Good News After spending the first four weeks in obscurity, have made some noise winning their third straight despite the unfortunate incident with Sims-Walker and his 0 points - have a weekly first on their resume and break into the upper level for the first time this year
Pts 579 Bad News Most of it seems to be in the past but will be without Ronnie Brown this week who is on a bye

Middle Tier

Pretty Kitty Central 12 3-2-0 Good News Won two in row but...
Pts 566 Bad News Actually lost ground in the standings with a win because of total points -  head to head league but total points still looms large
Reno 11 3-2-0 Good News Won a weekly first in week two and are above .500 with a solid 11VP
Pts 554 Bad News Lost a 96-95 heartbreaker that plummets them from 2nd to 6th - had Braylon Edwards on the bench Monday night
Nasty Aggravators 10 3-2-0 Good News It got them just 2VP but their 96-95 win over Reno carries them across the Mendoza line and into solid contention at 7th and 10VP, just 4VP behind the leader
Pts 532 Bad News They must now play a red hot TnT team without Peyton Manning who is on a bye
SS Stoggies 9 2-3-0 Good News Lost two in a row but remain on the right side of the tracks and points are solid at 5th in the conference
Pts 573 Bad News Back to back losses have dropped them to their lowest position in the standings, not over but right at the brink

Bottom Tier

Weekend Warriors 9 2-3-0 Good News Didn't break 100 but still earned an important VP in a week where the scoring was high
Pts 543 Bad News The decision to leave Joseph Addai on the bench had a price - the cost was 9th and just inside the bottom tier instead of 5th and just outside the top
Smiley's Snipers 8 1-4-0 Good News Power rankings indicate could have won three more games so potential is there - just 1VP from a wildcard and 3VP from a bye so still very much in contention
Pts 587 Bad News Have four losses so margin for error thin
Little Johnny's 3 0-5-0 Good News Teams have made the playoffs after an  0-5 start including their R&J team in 2007
Pts 528 Bad News Low point total means they probably have to win five of last six

Knockout Kings VP W-L-T

Comments

15 3-1-0 Good News Monster week knocking B&B unconscious 182-91 with every player but one in double digits; tied Archie's for high week; after two weeks in second back in first for the second time this year; leading entire league in points; second in entire league in VP - opportunity to take a commanding lead as they play the second place team Archie's this week
Pts 690 Bad News Have been assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct fine for running up the score on B&B - Dave no checks please
Archie's 14 3-2-0 Good News After falling out of the top four a big 4VP win puts them not only back in, but back in the top two; had their high week tied but still leading the league in weekly winnings; lead the league in coaching with a 91.2 efficiency rating; 2nd in conference points 3rd overall - can reclaim the top spot with a win over the Knockout Kings this week
Pts 653 Bad News Already thin at RB will have to challenge for the top spot without Addai who is on a bye
Irish Talbots 12 2-2-1 Good News Lost their game but not their third-place position earning 1VP in the loss
Pts 606 Bad News Different lineup would have won them their game - they remain in third but go from tied in VP to 3VP behind the leader
Rounder 17 11 3-2-0 Good News Remain in the top tier after a 0VP week - will play the 5th place team this week to remain here
Pts 583 Bad News Still very thin at RB and with the top tier on the line this week have to play without Peyton who is on a bye

Middle Tier

French River 11 3-2-0 Good News Earned a VP in their loss and only dropped one position
Pts 575 Bad News Braylon Edwards successful Jet debut along with Calvin Johnson's injury knock them out of the top tier
MNE

11 2-3-0 Good News Lose but hold their position in the standings; only team to not play Sims-Walker - are they smarter than everyone else?
Pts 609 Bad News Don't lose any ground in the standings with their loss but go from 1 to 4 behind in the VP column
Pretty Kitty West 10 3-2-0 Good News After a two game losing streak and on the verge of the bottom tier, right the ship with a win creating some space between them and oblivion - picking up Braylon Edwards in a trade is the difference
Pts 557 Bad News Between injuries and byes very thin at RB for week 6
J&J

9 3-2-0 Good News Were on a three-game win steak until this week's loss - only drop one position with the loss and still above .500 and the cut line
Pts 511 Bad News Had a horrible week scoring just 79 points - early line has MNE favored by 60 points

Bottom Tier

Commish West 8 2-3-0 Good News Come from behind win thanks to Ronnie Brown on Monday night break a two-Game losing streak
Pts 513 Bad News Points still weak, still in the bottom tier and their best player of late Ronnie Brown on a bye this week
Brookline 6 2-3-0 Good News Had their best scoring week of the year of 124 points in winning their second game in a row lifting them out of the West cellar for the first time this year
Pts 479 Bad News Earning no VP through the first three weeks has them still in the bottom tier even after two straight wins
B&B 4 1-4-0 Good News Have to go back to week 1 when they scored 142 points, won their game, earned 4VP, and even took a weekly second
Pts 479 Bad News Since week 1 they haven't broke 100, haven't won a game, haven't earned a VP - ouch

PFFL STUFF

The Score: It seems the one consonant about the scoring is there are no consonant trends. We stated last week that week five has been the lowest scoring week of the current scoring system so naturally week five of this year is relatively high scoring. The three conferences posted a 118 average well above the 113.5 average going in. This week's scoring raised the current yearly average nearly a whole point to 114.4.

Tip: Some important information for those of you who use the Game Day program to follow the games: Before every use click on the options tab at the top of the screen; at the bottom left of the options screen click on the Check for Game Day Program Updates Now tab. Also after kickoff on the same options page at the very top right of the page click on Update Starters. You should click on Update Starters after kickoff of the 1:00, 4:00, and Sunday night and Monday night games because teams may have changed their lineups just before the games start.

Merit: Hey, I'm not George Bush why didn't I win the Nobel Peace Prize.

                                           Did You Know Stuff

● The Cardiac Central drama continues with another one-point and two-point game this week. The Central has everything but a tie which by the way both the East and West have. That makes 13 games now decided by four or less points through five weeks in the Central compared to four in the East and three in the West.

● The No Names of the average are once again dominating the teams in the East Conference. While both the Central and West post winning records of 3-2, the East is 1-4 against the boys of the median.

● Every team has at least one Coulda won or Woulda lost stat except the Rounder 17. They have a zero in both columns. If your wondering why the Aggravators have a 4 in the Coulda column and a 2 in the Woulda column with just five games played, it's because they have a tie and the system evidently can give both for a tie.

● Ok you all know this but a reminder to put your lineups in before Sunday and make changes later. You never know what is going to transpire that could keep you from making your changes on Sunday or even a Thursday or Saturday when there is a game on those days. But I know this is totally unnecessary because you are all way too smart to ever get caught with last weeks lineup and players that are out.

There are six (6) regular season games remaining.

PFFL Trivia Answer

James Wilder

The others never carried the ball 400 times in a season. Wilder went from 161 carries in 1983, to 407 for the Buccaneers in 1984. He rushed for 1544 yards for a 3.8 average and 13 TDs in his record-setting season. Eric Dickerson was the second running back in history to carry the ball for more than 400 times in a season in 1986 with the Rams, then Jamal Anderson was the third with 410 for the Atlanta Falcons in 1998.
