Pittsburgh Survival Football
Survivor 1: The two obvious picks and most heavily played teams Indy and NE did what was expected of them and won easily. There were definitely some interesting choices this week on some road teams but the only losers were on two home teams Carolina and the Giants accounting for 12 losses. There were a total of nine teams chosen with just these two losers but hey, I'm a Steeler fan too but don't think I would have chosen them this week. Yeah they won but the two diehards who took Pittsburgh over an undefeated Minnesota team must have had tickets and wanted to make it more exciting I guess. Bottom line the contest is still over the 200 mark with 206 picking in the upcoming week 8.
Survivor 2: The second contest had a much better week than its inaugural one losing just 9 contestants. The picks and percentages were very similar to the first contest with one exception: nobody took Pittsburgh in this one. There were 8 teams chosen with the same two losers as the first, Carolina and the Giants. The second contest is already under 100 showing just 99 placing orders in week 8.

PFFL Trivia

In Barry Sanders' rookie season, he needed 10 yards to own the NFL rushing title. It was the 4th quarter against the Falcons in Atlanta, and there was plenty of time left. Barry Sanders decided to remove himself from the game instead. Who was crowned the rushing king that year?

20 4-3-0 Good News Ok let's see, they lose again and what happens? They not only remain in first but increase their lead by 1VP and go from 3rd in conference points to 1st - Vincent I was joking about you selling your soul for fantasy success, wasn't I?
Pts 900 Bad News Came in third for the week and lost; had Vernon Davis' 34 points on the bench - would he have won them their game? Oh yeah!
Commish East 18 5-1-1 Good News Maybe not so much Good News as Good Luck as the point total of 777 suggests; ninth in points yet 2nd in the standings - there are good Enigmas and bad Enigmas and believe me I have experienced the dark side of this phenomenon but this is the first time on the "good" side!
Pts 777 Bad News Every team in the upper two tiers have more points putting them on very thin ice
TD's 17 4-3-0 Good News Drop just 1 spot with a 0VP week and get their two big guns back this week
Pts 859 Bad News Had their worst week of the year just 75 points, first time they failed to break 100 - have their big guns back after a bye but bad week has them now within 1VP of the middle tier
Downtowners 16 4-3-0 Good News Also drop just 1 spot with a 0VP week and even though they also had their worst week of the year of 110 points, remain 2nd in conference points
Pts 893 Bad News Like the TD's the bad week has eradicated their cushion over the land without byes

Middle Tier

T Bones 16 4-3-0 Good News Second straight win doesn't put them back into the top tier but erases the VP gap with fourth and now even in range of the top spot 4VP back - and I don't think Ritchie is mad at me anymore
Pts 882 Bad News Yes there have been no disconnected, nonsensical message board posts this year but believe me, you know who is still lurking out there somewhere

Justice

14 4-3-0 Good News Down 8 with 1 player left to their counterpart barristers Darrlys 2 players on Monday night, they pull out a 123-120 win on the back of DeSean Jackson's 27 points to not only claim legal bragging rights, but move up one position and in 2VP range of the byes - Dave was so happy he dropped all lawsuits against the league
Pts 826 Bad News Have Randy Moss off this week - bracing for legal action from the Darrlys
Syndicate 13 3-4-0 Good News Their second 4VP week pulls them away from the edge and back into solid contention for a bye -  have won a weekly first with both of their 4VP weeks and although in the middle of the standings, lead the conference in weekly winnings
Pts 855 Bad News Have a very important game with the Darrlys this week where a loss could possibly push them back to and even possibly over the edge - have three key players on a bye

Darrlys

13 3-4-0 Good News Did earn 1VP in their heartbreaker loss to Justice at least and still have a cushion over the cellar dwellers of 2VP - play the team directly above them this week the Syndicate so destiny in their own hands
Pts 795 Bad News Devastating last minute loss on Monday night has situated them from challenging the top tier to fighting off the bottom; will be without Brady for their pivotal game with the Syndicate this week - just filed suit against Justice for wrongful loss

Bottom Tier

Aggravators 11 3-3-0 Good News Squeaked out the average 115-114 on the leg of David Akers on Monday night earning their second straight win, keeping them within striking distance of the land of the living
Pts 693 Bad News Actually lost ground to the 8th place team by 1VP now 2VP out
Twisted Helmets 9 2-5-0 Good News Held off the Downtowners on Monday night when Westbrook went down to earn 4 big VP pulling them out of the East cellar and into the light of the tunnel to the wildcards
Pts 799 Bad News Yes the early line has them favored 8 over Commish East and they have more points than them but who wants to play an Enigma?
Legion of Doom 7 1-6-0 Good News Aren't last in points and stats say they could have won 4 more games
Pts 749 Bad News Now 6VP from a wildcard with just 4 regular season games left and lost those 4 games

Comments

20 6-1-0 Good News Come-from-behind 108-103 win on Monday night extends their league-leading win streak to 6 and their streak atop the Central to 4 weeks; have most wins of any team and tied for 2nd most VP with 20; have great hygiene
Pts 831 Bad News Play the 10th place team this week but a very underrated team that has just 16 less points than them and who is actually favored by 3 on the site -  will be without their top back Cedric Benson who is on a bye
TnT 19 5-2-0 Good News After their heartbreaking 1 point loss to Cleantown in week 3 have reeled off 4 in a row; earned Team of the Week honors this week, their second weekly first of the year and lead the conference in winnings; are 1st in Central points 2nd overall
Pts 911 Bad News Big Ben is off this week and for some reason the site has them underdogs to the last place team - after being chastised for playing Hester over Boldin by Big Tom then having the decision actually win them a Team of the Week Honor, Little Tommy's head is now triple its size
Pretty Kitty Central 18 5-2-0 Good News Held off the Aggravators on Monday night to extend their win streak to 4; after two straight wins failed, their third win of a 4 game streak finally launches them back into the top 4
Pts 821 Bad News As close as the Central conference is could find themselves right back where they were if they don't win again this week and will be without Brady in a game the site has them 19-point underdogs to Reno
SS Stoggies 17 4-3-0 Good News Back to back 2nd place weeks have given them 2 wins, 8VP, and moved them from 9th to a spot in the upper echelon - are now 2nd in conference points 8th overall
Pts 867 Bad News With their solid points as long as they win it's all good

Middle Tier

JR-s Boys 16 5-2-0 Good News Rebounded nicely from a 0VP week with a 3VP win moving them up one in the standings and within 1VP of the beautiful people - points still below average but have been steadily improving
Pts 789 Bad News John is in so many leagues he has trouble keeping them straight - John trust me, this is the one you want to pay the most attention to!
Reno 16 4-3-0 Good News Broke the jinx of below average scoring in the odd weeks with 120 points in week 7
Pts 827 Bad News Still lost their game dropping two positions and out of the top tier - have their two best WRs off this week
Boys of Autumn 15 4-3-0 Good News Just first loss in the last 5 weeks and still contending just 2VP out of the top tier and just 5VP from the top
Pts 825 Bad News 0VP week dropped them like a rock from 3rd to 7th
Nasty Aggravators 11 3-4-0 Good News The 1VP earned in their loss allows them to stay above the cut line
Pts 733 Bad News The 114-106 loss was self inflicted by a 68.8 efficiency rating - playing Ted Ginn Jr. over Vernon Davis and his 34 points has them on the fence

Bottom Tier

Weekend Warriors 10 2-5-0 Good News Only 1VP from a wildcard even though they lost 3 in a row
Pts 755 Bad News At least they haven't fallen deeper but seem stuck just under the wire in 9th place for 3 straight weeks
Little Johnny's 9 1-6-0 Good News Actually a pretty good team that has no business being this low; according to the power ranking report could have won five of the six games they lost - playing the first place team and site has them favored!
Pts 815 Bad News Still time but bad or unlucky start whichever you prefer has taken away their margin of error
Smiley's Snipers 8 1-6-0 Good News George is back from vacation and back in charge of his lineup
Pts 780 Bad News His lineup scored just 88 with a PP of 93

Comments

22 5-1-1 Good News Down 16 going into Monday night DeSean Jackson's 27 knocks out Rounder and they keep on rolling with the most VP in the league 22; largest lead over 2nd 4VP; most points in the entire league by a considerable margin of 55; have an 8VP lead over the middle tier with just 4 games remaining; have no bye problems this week and site has them favored by 46 over Brookline; have the 2nd most PP in the league - what, you want more?
Pts 966 Bad News Their defense has a bye in week 10
MNE 18 4-3-0 Good News Whew! A 116-115 nail-biter over Archie's keeps them in second and in sight of the leader; lead the league in power rank and PP; 2nd in conference points 3rd overall - almost blew it by choosing to play Big Ben over Brees but a win is a win and they now have a 2VP lead over second
Pts 910 Bad News Welker on a bye but Simms-Walker comes off one so a trade off really
Irish Talbots 16 3-3-1 Good News Their third, yes their third weekly first vaults them from 7th to 3rd and gives them the league lead in weekly winnings; they had all but 1 player score in double digits putting them right back into the thick of the byes - the Twenty-First Amendment
Pts 845 Bad News Some bye concerns this week
Archie's 16 3-4-0 Good News Remain in the top tier with a loss and lose no ground to the middle tier maintaining a 2VP gap - 93.5 rating this week helps keep them #1 in coaching with an overall rating of 92.2 and the only team in the league in the 90 percentile
Pts 887 Bad News Tough, tough 116-115 loss loses them 1 position in the standings; if they play Akers instead of Crosby they win - no blame here Archibald kickers are a total toss up each week

Middle Tier

French River 14 4-3-0 Good News Lose the top tier but still closer to the top than the bottom - Calvin Johnson might be back this week
Pts 811 Bad News With Leon Washington out for the year and Portis on a bye, very thin at RB
Pretty Kitty West 14 4-3-0 Good News Nothing they could do about the loss as a 100% rating would not have helped but did earn a VP at least keeping them relatively close to the byes - not 1 player on a bye this week
Pts 778 Bad News Still in striking range of the top but loss now has them in range with the bottom also
Rounder 17 13 3-4-0 Good News Lost three in a row but still in wildcard country at least
Pts 812 Bad News Have gone from 1st to 7th in three game losing streak; now within range of the bottom tier and have their 2 best WRs off this week
B&B 12 3-4-0 Good News Not only have they come back to life, but actually now eligible for a wildcard - back to back wins have not only put them above the cut line, but at just 4VP from 4th even a bye is now in range - rumor has it that majority owner Billy has taken over the reins of the team and is responsible for their recent success
Pts 749 Bad News Brady is on a bye this week

Bottom Tier

Brookline 11 3-4-0 Good News Third win has put them at their highest point in the standings this year and just 1VP from the wildcard tier, the closest they have been to the middle tier this year
Pts 713 Bad News Play the KO Kings this week and site has them a 46 point dog
J&J 10 3-4-0 Good News They are not in last and still just 1 win from a wildcard
Pts 722 Bad News Went into Monday night with Westbrook and down just 9 points but Westbrook gets just 1 before getting kicked in the head essentially kicking them out of the middle tier
Commish West 10 3-4-0 Good News They won the game
Pts 704 Bad News But lost the battle - drop to the cellar even with a win

PFFL STUFF

The Score: After back to back above average weeks, the scoring settled down a bit with a slightly below average week. Week 7 clocked in at 115, one point below the yearly average of 116 going into the week. The current average dropped just a tenth of a point to 115.9, the exact average it was after seven weeks last year.

Parity?: While there seems to be some measure of parity in the PFFL this year - no undefeated teams after just three weeks - I don't think the NFL knows the meaning of the word anymore. After 7 weeks there are still 3 undefeated teams but that isn't the issue: The issue is there are some really bad teams this year that really are not any competition at all for the better teams. Cleveland, Kansas City, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, and Oakland combined for just 23 points on Sunday.

                                            Did You Know Stuff

● The Cardiac Central was the only conference without a close game this week. Both the East and West featured one-point contests. But overall the Central still has by far the most games decided by 4 or less (14) and is also the closest race of the three conferences.

● The average lost in all three conferences this week. It was a squeaker but even the East who has the only losing record, beat the average by a single point to improve their record to 3-4 against the No Names. The overall record of all three conferences against the average is 12-9.

● The Rounder 17 finally put up a stat in the coulda-woulda columns. There are now no teams without at least one coulda or woulda stat. And for the record it was a coulda won!

● The West has the most Team of the Week Honors with 4. The Central can claim 2 and the East can boast only 1. No one has more than 1.

● Unlimited free substitution in the NFL began in 1962. Players no longer had to play both offense and defense that year.
Chuck Bednarik was the last player in that era that played both sides of the ball. He was known as the NFL's last "iron man". He played in eight pro bowls, was MVP in the 1954 title game, was named the NFL's all time center and averaged 58 minutes per game. Yeah, I never heard of him either!

There are Four (4) regular season games remaining.

PFFL Trivia Answer

Christian Okoye

Barry Sanders seemed to shun the spotlight. He could have also owned a few college football records at Oklahoma State, but also chose to sit out instead. He retired in the prime of his career about 1,500 yards short of the all-time rushing mark owned at the time by Walter Payton. Emmitt Smith has broken it since, but paid his respect to Barry by stating, "He was no Barry. Barry would break your kneecaps if you attempted to tackle him".
