Pittsburgh Survival Football
Survivor 1: There were repeated attempts by one of the 6 finalists to cut a deal before the final week began but it didn't come to fruition. No matter as all 6 won but I have to say not without some controversy. Although one of the survivors had the 14.5 point favorite Atlanta available, they chose the 3.5 point favorite Detroit instead. At first I thought he was just having some fun because the would be deal maker was acknowledging the person who had Indy left as the favorite instead of them; but when the pick was still there past the deadline I must admit I was perplexed. Anyway all six won and this is the sixth time in the 10 years of the contest that multiple survivors reached week 17. So congratulations to the 6 co-champions of the 2010 Pittsburgh Survival Football Contest.
Survivor 2: Unlike the first contest not everyone finished the year with a win here. And you won't see it very often but all 5 week 17 survivors picked a different team. Without the two or three big favorites available to pick it was a tough board no doubt and picking a 3 point favorite on the road is always risky as the person who went down with St. Louis knows. This is the first time since 2006 that there were less than 10 winners in the second contest and the second straight year and only the third time in 10 years the second contests had less winners than the first. All in all it was an exciting year for both contest so congratulations to the 4 co-champions of the 2010 Pittsburgh Survival Football 2 Contest.

The PFFL 2010  Good Bad and the UGLY!

EastwoodThe Good: After getting deported by the Darryls, the owners of Snake & Shake forming a new team and right off winning the PFFL 2010 Championship . . . JR's Boys winning their first PFFL Total Point Title . . . The Endzonerz winning the West and finishing 1st in weekly winnings . . . Park Valley winning the Central Conference in one of those Monday-night-fourth-quarter-thrillers . . . M4 winning the first championship of the Sandlot League . . . IC Lightning's point dominance in the Sandlot League culminating in winning the first Sandlot Total Point Title . . . After a very enigmatic-like season the Syndicate winning the Consolation Tournament and then winning the Sandlot Consolation Tournament with their Bartertown team . . . French River claiming Coach of the Year Honors for 2010 . . . The Endzonerz' 210-point week and IC Lightning's even better 221 in the Sandlot . . . TnT's 10-1 regular season record . . . The Endzonerz three Team of the Week Honors . . . The first Sandlot Season . . . The 10th drafting position - 4 championships . . . Snake & Shake's trades with the KO Kings . . . Franklin of the Central Conference Sharks as one of the 6 co-champions of the Pittsburgh Survival Football Contest . . . The upcoming 20th Season of the PFFL!

The Good, the Bad and the UglyThe Bad: B&B's league-low efficiency rating of 74.3% . . . The #4 rank - although a #4 won in the Sandlot it is still the only rank that hasn't won a title in 15 years in the main league . . . Randy Moss's postseason production - 9 points in the final six weeks . . . Randy Moss . . . Snake & Shakes' weekly winnings - first champions without winning a single week . . . Maybe more strange than bad the Syndicate and Bartertown's message board posts . . . Dean's message board posts - mostly bad . . . The Conference Championship and Championship games lack of drama . . . Reno's week 13 lineup selection costing Pretty Kitty the championship . . . IC Lightning's finish to the Sandlot Season - three straight sub-100 games . . . Trading away Michael Vick . . . The 2010 Kevin Cody Consortium - 6 teams, 1 wildcard win . . . The possibility they don't play football next year - are they nuts?

The Good, the Bad and the UglyThe Ugly: Pick Six 8-game losing streak finishing the year 3-8 after winning their first 3 . . . Boys of Autumn's week 14 performance - 38 points . . . The manner in which the JR's Boys lost in the second round of the Central playoffs . . . IC Lightning's Sandlot League Playoff loss 86-84 . . . Picking a loser in week 16 or 17 of the Survivor Contest . . . Being one of 4 teams with zero winnings . . . Finishing 36 out of 36 in league points . . . Waiting all year for Vincent Jackson and in his first game back he leaves the game after a few plays with an injury and you lose your wildcard game by 2 points (Reno 142 Nasty Aggravators 140) . . . TO's early exit in week 15 without a point scored costing IC Lightning a chance to participate in the PFFL Championship Game . . . Last year I ended the Ugly segment with this statement: "Politics - can it get any uglier!" It would seem the answer is YES!

This year there were more than a few players that were exceptional in one way or another. Peyton Hillis for example had a monster year and the value doesn't get any better than free agent but he kind of faded down the stretch. Roddy White may have established himself as the new #1 receiver in next year's draft and gets and deserves considerable consideration but his separation from the next receiver was just fair and his overall rank was 9th. Peyton Manning pulled ahead in the last week to emerge as the #1 QB but the other stud QBs were close behind in points and he didn't finish as the overall #1. Obviously I took a long hard look at Michael Vick. He didn't finish the year with the most points or #1 rank but he did finish with the highest weekly average. And you had to consider that one monster number of 52 in week 10 that ranks as the third highest week of all time. However I also had to take into account the games missed because of injury and him sitting out the final week. I must admit though barring injury he probably wins this award; but what actually made up my mind was reading about last year's MVP.

After reading why Chris Johnson was chosen last year and comparing it to what Arian Foster did this year, the decision was made. Johnson had more total yards but just 4 more total points and Foster was first in league points this year while Johnson was second last year; the gap between Foster and the next RB was 88 compared to 67 for Johnson, a significant difference with the next closest gap being 23 between the top two receivers; Foster's draft value was also better going in the 3rd and 4th rounds compared to Johnson going in the 1st and 2nd; and like Johnson, Foster never let up through the playoff weeks and both finished the season on a high with 30+ points in week 17. If Johnson could win the award with his statistics you have to figure Foster deserves it also. Although I do have to give Vick at least honorable mention!

The Sandlot Score:
The Sandlot League finishes the year with a better week than the Main League but it finishes the year on a low note; posting the lowest weekly average of the year. The gap was closed a little but the upstarts still finish about a half point below the establishment. The first year of the Sandlot league will go down as below average in scoring. The beginning PFFL average in the current scoring system was 117.4.

Playoff Tournament Draft:
This year's draft will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 5. Draft information can be accessed here:
2010 Playoff Tournament Rules. The 2010 site can be accessed here: 2010 Playoff Tournament. The site lists last year's participants for now. There is a maximum of 24 teams or two 12-team drafts. The final structure of the contest is determined by the number of teams participating so I would appreciate teams interested reserve a spot at their earliest convenience. Those participating should arrive no later than 7:30 pm.

Did You Know Stuff

● In the 16 years of head to head play, there has been at least one tie in every year except 1998. There was one tie this year.

● In the early days of fantasy football when only scoring plays earned points, kickers were not only some of the highest scoring players, but were drafted in the first round even as high as #1. They now are the lowest scoring position and among the last players to be picked.

● No team had an efficiency rating in the 90 percentile this year including the Sandlot League. This year's high was 88.8% by French River and 88.9% by M4 in the Sandlot League. The record is held by the 2007 Red Raiders - 92.2%.  It's understandable that B&B had the most potential points this year as they also had the lowest efficiency rating of 74.3%.

● The 200 mark was breached twice this year. In the Main League the Endzonerz put up 210 in week 11. The Knockout Kings hold the record they set last year with 216 points in week 14. However IC Lightning set a new high of 221 in the Sandlot league. The 50 point mark was also breached twice this year 52 by Michael Vick in week 10 and 50 by Jahvid Best in week 2.
Chris Johnson holds the record with 55 in week 2 of last year.

● In the Central Park Valley earned just the #3 rank but in any other conference they would have earned the #1 rank.

● The TD's win the undesirable honor of the team with the most points scored against, 1417.

● It wasn't a good year for coaching. Last year there were no teams below 80% in efficiency. This year 9 teams were in the 70 percentile.

Big Kev made the Sandlot Championship Game with a 99.4 postseason average and a 5-7 regular season record.

B&B's 6 in the Woulda Lost column was the highest number in either the Coulda or Woulda columns including the Sandlot League.

● Some teams are bad after traveling from one coast to the other, some are bad on artificial surfaces, some are bad in cold weather, and some are bad in week 14. For the second year in a row the Boys of Autumn have recorded the lowest score of the year and both times it was done in week 14. Last year it was 56 this year it's 38!

● The T Bones registered the most bench points in the league of 1528. The Knockout Kings recorded the least amount of 776.

Final Word: The upcoming season will be the 20th year of the PFFL. I can't believe we still haven't had a repeat champion. I have written many closing statements over the years and this year I would like to conclude our 19th season with just two simple assertions: First I would like to reaffirm my thanks to all who participated in the past and will join us in the future. Second I intend on making our 20th year our best year ever!

PFFL Trivia Answer Loren Toews
Toews, an 8th round draft choice from Cal in 1973, played 11 seasons for the Steelers. He started in SB XIII and XIV, and subbed for Russell in IX. Not well known to this day among Steeler fans, he actually played in the final 57 consecutive games of his career. Edwards played in IX and X; Banaszek in X, XIII and XIV; and Russell in IX and X.
