Pittsburgh Survival Football
Survivor 1: Welcome to Let's Make A Deal! Well to let's try to make a deal anyway. There has been an effort put forth for a save deal but two of the magnificent seven have so far rejected any arrangements. While I'm personally not in favor of a split, I see nothing wrong with a save where it is assured no one goes home empty handed. It just seems so wrong to be one of just seven remaining of 597 yet if you lose you are treated the same as those who lost in week 1. All seven did survive this week but it is ironic that the one that came closest to elimination was the #1 dissenter of any deal making. As the Dallas game went into overtime you know the consorting five were thinking of how satisfying it would be if the so called favorite and holdout of any deal was the one eliminated. But it wasn't to be so we enter week 12 with still seven survivors and zero deals - so far...
Survival 2: With just one casualty to report the second contest is still a long way from the province of the first. A single loss leaves a healthy 45 survivors to pick in week 12. Not much to say here especially with just one loss but the one loss was at least interesting. Taking the Jets on the road always risky but losing the way they did has to make the loss sting more than usual. Next to the word Enigma in the dictionary is a picture of Tim Tebow. Last week he wins completing just two passes and this week again he pulls out a game with a late TD run. Have to believe the second contest will at least outlive the first.

Looking Back at 20 Years of the PFFL - 2004 Year 13

There still hasn't been a repeat winner in the PFFL and what happened in 2004 also has yet to be repeated. For the first and so far only time a team won both the head to head and total point titles. In fact the 2004 Playmakers pulled off the hat trick also winning the weekly money title. Their season was so successful they continue to hold the overall winnings record to this day. They won the championship easily by a score of 100-84-74-66 over DGB, Special K and the Red Raiders. However the total point victory was a different story. They actually trailed going into the final week but completed the most successful season in the history of the PFFL with a come from behind 3 point margin of victory over the SS Stoggies.

The Stoggies won some consolation for losing out on the total point title by winning the Coach of the Year Honors but it was Justice who won the Consolation Tournament. The 2004 Survivor contest didn't make it past week 12. Other than the very first contest in 2001 that ended in week 8, this was the next shortest contest ever.

#1 Cleantown

3 Dego's R Us 121
1 Cleantown 74
With all the success they have been having losing, they make absolutely sure they lose their final game by putting up the lowest score in the league. Not the lowest score in the East, the lowest score in the entire league and you can throw in the Sandlot if you like. Well if it's worth doing it's worth doing right that's what I say. No one ever got to be #1 by not trying just a little. Ok let's review: Five weeks ago they were 6-0 with a 3VP lead. After tying their week 7 game they lose their next 4 straight. Bottom line, with just a flimsy 3VP lead they fail to win any of their final 5 games and earn the #1 rank in the East. They go on a 4 game losing streak and win the East. Yes I was kidding when I said I can't wait to see how they advance in the playoffs without winning but I was also kidding when I said they were going to win the East without winning.

#2 Cousins Mc

2 Cousins Mc 110

Eleven more points wouldn't have won them their game but it would have won them the #1 seed. At the same time 7 less points and they lose 2nd and their second bye. I guess it's no harm no foul.

#3 Dego's R Us

3 Dego's R Us 121
1 Cleantown 74
Not sure if Cleantown laid down for them here but if they did I don't blame them with all the success they were having by losing. The Degos however had to earn their success the old fashion way by winning and they did a lot of it down the stretch. After an 0-3 start the Gumbas finish the season on a 5-0 run to earn the #3 rank and an all important bye.

#4 IC Lightning

4 IC Lightning 116
10 Midquippa 104
We informed them they needed at least 3VP to assure a bye and it's a good thing they were listening because anything less than the 3VP they earned and they would be byeless. Yes one less VP would have lost them their bye but 1 more VP would have got them two byes. And 1 more VP was just 5 points away! You know I have been rough on Vincent this year and maybe I should just give him a pass here but you know I just can't do that. Ok let's do this real fast then get the hell out of here: If they play Dwayne Bowe they finish 2nd with two byes see ya!

Did all they could do in the final week to earn a bye. In fact went above and beyond the call of duty with a Team of the Week but just didn't get the cooperation they needed from IC Lightning or the Degos. Had a wildcard locked up going in and that's what they get going out. Really could have used a bye with Jackson getting hurt so very unfortunate after a league high 158 points they still have to play in week 12.

Needed 1VP to lock up a wildcard and although that's what they get, would have earned the 8th rank regardless because Midquippa failed to earn 4VP. And they played Fitz this week. Yea Todd, I mean yea Dean!

They can thank New England's 20 defensive points on Monday night for the come-from-behind win but were locked into a wildcard either way. Really they can thank Kevin Smith's 42 points but again were basically locked into their position because even if they drop a position with a loss they still have the same opponent this week. But they do break a 4 game losing streak.

Basically in the same position the Syndicate was: locked into a wildcard and would finish in either 6th or 7th. It's 7th but the same opponent either way.

Finish the year with back to back wins but just waited too long to get going.

Between Roethlisberger and Stafford picked right just 2 of 10 times going into the final week and one of those two correct was when Stafford was on a bye. So you guess they finish with 3 of 10 considering Big Ben was off this week. Well you would have guessed wrong. It's now 2 of 11 as they leave Roethlisberger in on his bye and leave Stafford and his 36 points on the bench. No it didn't matter and no they wouldn't have even won playing the Team of the Week but all I have to say is: CMON MAN!

1 Park Valley 139
Win the Central heavy weight title fight with a solid weekly first performance. Been trying to catch Arnie for the entire second half of the regular season and finally do it in the final week. Wasn't a whole lot at stake as both teams had two byes locked up but bragging rights and the #1 seed in the Central are now theirs.

#2 Arnie's Army

2 Arnie's Army 129
1 Park Valley 139
The difference between a tie and a win or loss is 1 point and it turns out that was the difference in 1st or 2nd in the Central. Last week if the Army score one more point they win instead of tie and the 2VP they earned this week in the loss would have been enough to keep them in the top spot. It's amazing how you can play 11 weeks and a single point can be the difference in #1 or #2. No difference in byes however as both get 2.
#3 JR's Boys
4 H Hammers 85
3 JR's Boys 133
Make absolutely sure they don't have to play this week with a 4VP win. A 1VP loss would have allowed Frannie's to knock them off the perch but a solid weekly second finish avoids a train wreck and moves them up one to 3rd.
#4 H Hammers
4 H Hammers 85
3 JR's Boys 133
Well they do leave the barn door open by failing to earn any VP but no byes escape. Both the TD's and the Sharks fail to act on the opportunity and the Hammers although drop to 4th, don't drop off the top tier. They don't back into a bye because this one was basically earned with their week 10 win.

5 Frannie's Train 104
Snake & Shake 97
They can thank a Mr. Riley Cooper and his 18 points for their wildcard. With Maclin out he was the difference for the Train. Make no mistake had they not won this game they are out and they were losing badly going into the Philadelphia game. Young, McCoy and Celek all did a decent job but Cooper's 18 put them over the top. Seven less points and they are out.

Don't know if they know how close they came to elimination but I'm sure Bartertown knows. Failing to secure any VP left them extremely vulnerable but as we have been saying their win total has been making the difference for them and it was all the difference this week in a wildcard birth or CT birth.

Their strength lately has been their receivers and they use that strength this week to make absolutely sure they get their wildcard. Their four receivers alone match their opponents total output. The 4VP win moves them up two positions to 6th but do have an unlucky draw in the TD's. Although they are ranked lower than them they are the current conference leader in points.

You never know what to expect from this team. Truly this year's enigma they finish the season with a 4-7 record ranked #1 in Central points. This week anyway understandable they lose playing without Foster and Welker putting up just 4 but as their #1 point ranking indicates, can put up a big number at any time. When at full strength as good as any team in the league but actually not at full strength right now with Cutler going down and Bradshaw sidelined. But Foster and Graham back this week and that's huge.

When you don't control your own destiny you open the door for any abstraction to determine your fate. Going in 4VP didn't guarantee anything but it turns out 4VP would have meant a wildcard. They earn 3 and 4 was just 3 points away. Actually they had those 3 points made for a while and even 4 more but like we said when things aren't in your control your at the mercy of circumstance. A Brady to Hernandez TD pass late in the 4th quarter of the Monday night game put them in the top four bracket of weekly scoring and thus in the 4VP range. The abstraction you ask: illegal shift. Had nothing to do with the outcome of the play itself but everything to do with Bartertown's season.

Have a chance to further Bartertown's pain by knocking them out in the first round of the CT.

Along with the Bandits take advantage of Brookline's generosity and squeeze into the second spot. With all the injuries right now to some very important players the extra bye week could make all the difference for them. If 100% healthy come week 14 this team is as good as any in the league.

After sitting on top of the West for the past 6 weeks, they give it up in the final week. Considering they played the top point earner for the week they lose either way but scoring in the bottom 4 means 0VP and both the Bandits and Schleprock moved in for the kill. Did have some injury and bye issues but the timing of it means one less bye.

Had control of their destiny and controlled it with a bye-securing 4VP win. Every top tier team except Brookline finished the year with a 4VP win. Had they not won this game the Talbots would have stolen the bye with their weekly first performance. Shoulda Wouldas aside we congratulate them on finishing their first season in the PFFL with the 4th rank and a week 12 vacation.

Do all they can possibly do to get a bye and considering we are talking about putting up the highest score in the West and just 4 points less than the team of the week, do a lot. But the Lions made sure it wouldn't be enough by virtue of their own 4VP week. Get Mendenhall back this week and if they ever get Best back could be a real concern in the playoffs.

Actually lost their best opportunity for a bye last week in their 152-148 loss to Schleprock. It would have taken a perfect storm scenario this week but would had to win first and of course they didn't. Will have their hands full this week with a good Talbots team.

Don't sit Brady this week so no reason to sit Gronkowski either. What a deadly combination they have become. G-Ski has become every bit as lethal as the best WRs out there. Playing Brady this week although mattered in the win, didn't matter in the wildcard earned. Archie's never challenged so win or lose they get the birth. But where it did matter was in their opponent for this week. Had they lost this game they would be stuck with the Talbots and on paper anyway, a much tougher opponent than MNE.

Do the minimum needed to guarantee a postseason birth which is earn 1VP but again with Archie's losing no matter. Their position in the standings remains the same with the loss so they will be competing in the 2011 playoffs with the 7th rank. Considering the other two wildcard teams have significant more points, they also get a good draw in B&B.

Sandlot Score: The Main League may have had an off scoring week but the Sandlot was dead on average; for a week with byes anyway. This week's 122 was right in line with the other bye weeks. The six weeks of byes this year averaged 122.3. It would seem the scoring is in for an upturn because the five weeks without byes averaged 132.8 and the bye weeks are now through.

Maybe they should change their name to Avis or Buffalo but IC Lightning just seems to have a propensity for coming in second in this league. Last year they finished with five weekly seconds. This year they already have four.

● Officially Bozo's Circus is the only team to lock up a postseason birth with a "y" designation indicating a clinch for at least the top six. All most assuredly however they have locked up a top two and the bye. Also although not indicated, all most assuredly IC Lightning has locked up at least a top six. Unfortunately with two games remaining, mathematically the bottom four teams are eliminated. That means the six teams from 3rd to 8th will be fighting for the four remaining spots the final two weeks of the Sandlot regular season.

● Sandlot Regular Season Games Remaining: | 2 |

● A reminder this year just the top 6 make the playoffs with the 1 and 2 teams getting a bye. Check out the

High Week

IC Lightning - wk 2 199

PFFL Stuff

The Score: The final regular season week didn't lack drama but it did lack some scoring. It was the second lowest scoring week of the year and the lowest week 11 of the past six. The yearly scoring average dropped almost a full point but still remains above the beginning 5-year average. With the byes now finished it would seem for sure 2011 will finish higher than normal. The five weeks without byes averaged 125.5 while the six weeks with just 112.5.

●
Reminder: Thursday games the rest of the year except week 17. Very important do not drop a player from your roster that was in your lineup on Thursday. That action will lock your lineup and you will be unable to make any changes for the remainder of the week. As you know waivers are performed on Friday so make sure you don't drop any players in your lineup on Thursday in those waivers.

●
Note: Teams may now increase their rosters to 20. Also there are two waiver weeks left including this week and teams may acquire up to 5 players in each of these last two weeks. The Free Agent Deadline is Friday, December 2 at 8:00 pm.

● Thursday Updates:
So far the Thursday stat updates haven't changed anything except for a point here and there but hasn't had any effect on wins or VP - yet...

A meaningless penalty cost Bartertown a wildcard birth in the Central. Late in the 4th quarter of the Monday night game a Brady to Hernandez TD pass was called back because of an illegal shift call. Had the play stood Bartertown goes to the playoffs instead of the Sharks. BTW this information comes to you courtesy of Marty who was closely monitoring the situation in the Central on Monday night.

● Currently with just two, the West has fallen behind in Team of the Week Honors to the other two conferences. The East has four and the Central five.

Call it the ultimate back in. Cleantown failed to win their last five straight games in the East yet still earned the #1 seed in the conference. yea Kevin...

The Trading Deadline has past.

The Bye Weeks are over.

Good Luck to everyone in the postseason and

PFFL Trivia Answer Chargers
The others all entered the postseason as AFC teams. The Chargers were out, and finished their season 9-7, four losses more than in 2009. The Ravens finished the season at 12-4, the Jets 11-5, and the Colts went 10-6. The Raiders, who swept every team in their own division, did not get in either.
