Pittsburgh Survival Football
Survivor 1: What makes this contest so
popular is it's easy to play. What makes it so hard is its all or nothing
nature. Both MINSK and Green Bay were undefeated to this point.
While GB will still go on to the playoffs and possibly the Super Bowl
after their first loss, MINSK will retire to oblivion along with the
other 593 with one loss. Not since 2006 has there been so few remaining going
into week 16. That year was also the last time the contest didn't make it into
the final week. Three entered week 16 and just one survived. Again this year
there are 3 entering week 16. Especially this year that saw more than its
share of upsets, it is really remarkable to make it this far. But just doing
something remarkable doesn't pay off here as MINSK well knows: Only
those still with a chair when the music stops will be acknowledged. Good
Luck to the final Three!
Survival 2: We mentioned last week that this
week's schedule unlike the previous one wouldn't be conducive to picking
winners. Well with half of the teams picked losing, I guess point made. As a
result almost half of the week 15 Survivor 2 entries also lost. There still
should be multiple co-champions to share in the Survivor 2 pot but right now
each share of that pot almost doubled. With 18 still picking and just two
weeks left, I do believe there will be more winners than last year's 4; but
you never know...

Looking
Back at 20 Years of the PFFL - 2008 Year 17 |
After five years of a 4
conference configuration, the league retracted back to 3 where it stands today. And
after record high scoring in the previous year
championship game, the scoring retracted to the lowest game total of the
current scoring system. The Rounder 17 struggled early in the year
but a late charge earned them the #3 rank. From there it all fell into
place for them and in just their second year in the league they won the
2008 PFFL Championship. Their 126 points was the smallest winning total of
the current system and both other participants failed to even break the
league average. The Tommy Guns were favored to win the big game but
their RBs which were supposed to carry them dropped them hard and they
managed just 116. After winning the 2007 title the Syndicate was
going for back to back titles and also the honor of being the first team
to repeat ever but came in last with 111.
The Downtowners won the Total Point Title easily by the second
largest margin ever of 157. The T Bones took the 2008 CT title and
the JR's Boys had one of the most unusual and successful seasons
ever. Along with winning the Coach of the Year Award with an even 90.0 %
efficiency rating, they recorded 5 second-place-weekly finishes and three
ties. The most ties in a season by a single team.

WEEK 16 - PFFL Championship / Finals Consolation
Tournament |
This week the three Conference
Champions play in an interconference three-way title game for the
PFFL League Championship. The three
Consolation Tournament semifinal round conference winners also play a
three-way game to determine the tournament winner. The higher ranked team
still wins all ties in the championship games but in the case of a tie
between teams of the same rank the tie breakers are as follows:
1. Game
potential points.
2. The previous week's point total.
3 If still tied
continue back until tie is broken.
|
A reminder that weekly prizes and total points continue
to accrue through week 17 for all teams. The PFFL Conference
and overall
Point Champions are determined after week 17.

byes, and matchups of the postseason can be found in the

|
I have to say early on it looked like the Degos
were going to continue on their second-half-season roll. Romo throws up
30, Bush goes off with 27 and CJ has a solid 18. Add in AP playing
supposedly eliminating most of Gerhart's value for Capital and it looked
as though they would represent the East in the 2011 title game. But we did
say that Brees could make the difference for Capital and if Gerhart played
the RB edge could swing their way. Not only did Brees make a difference
with 40, but Gerhart played and played to the tune of 21.
It would take the Degos WRs to save them now but after the build up of how
they had the advantage in the category, they played flat with 9, 9, and 11
from the three they played and although two of Capital's WRs were good for
a combined total of 2 points, the other two came through with 19 each. But
after all was said and done, you could say the game was actually decided
by the defenses. The Dego's Baltimore fell completely flat with zero
points while Atlanta exploded with 21 for Capital. And there's that right
place at the right time thing we have been talking about for Capital.
Baltimore was on the road in SD while Atlanta had a great match up at home
against the Jaguars. |

|
The Valley didn't get the usual 30 or more out
of Rodgers but his 24 turned out to be sufficient. What turned out to be
more than sufficient and the main difference in the game was Megatron's
42, his best effort of the season. We did mention his extremely good
matchup this week and he took full advantage. But the Valley wasn't
without some apprehension. They did have a 41 point lead going into Monday
night but the Army still had some ammunition left in Gore and Wallace.
Location is everything in real estate and match ups are everything in
fantasy football. Along with our remarks of Gore's bad match up against
the Steelers, the last thing we said was Wallace will need a big day for
the Army to advance. The 12 and 11 they got respectively totaled just
about half of Johnson's 42 and there in lies the difference in this game.
We did mention the Army may choose to sit Gore but considering their PP
Points were lower than the Valley's starter points they at least escape
the what ifs. |

1 Bid 66 Bandits |

|
I simply lost count of the numerous twists and
turns that decided this game but I will tell you this: Leaping and a chop
block all had a hand in the outcome. First off both teams had
disappointing efforts from a RB. Kevin Smith finally plays the whole game
and gets just 5 while Helu came back to Earth with 9. The Bandits' Steve
Smith did come through with 19 and we did say he was key for them but if
they had won we may be crediting Roddy White's 35 with making the
difference. The true difference in this game however was Brees. His 40
doubled Newton's production and helped neutralize White's big game.
But this game was even closer than the 3 point difference in the score:
Schleprock took a 17 point lead and the Steelers defense into Monday
night. The Bandits hopes would be on Antonio Brown and David Akers. The
particulars mentioned in the opening statement about this game all had an
effect on the final score but the final and deciding factor was a penalty.
First lets get this out of the way: Had the Rock played SF defense instead
of Pittsburgh's there is very little drama in this game. Now I'm not
judging here (and you believe that right?) but just stating fact. The
bottom line is after a full season of 11 regular season games, trades,
injuries, a second round playoff win and nearly 4 quarters completed in
the final NFL game of the conference championships, a penalty decided
who won the West Conference. A completed pass to Brown that would have
generated more than enough points for a Bandit victory was nullified by
penalty and for what ever reason, Pittsburgh decided to punt on 4th down
knowing SF would just do a few kneel downs and end the game. |

Game Analysis
|
|
| QB |
Kind of a conundrum here: Capital and Schleprock both
have Brees canceling each other out; unless they both decide to play
Flacco and Fitzpatrick - nah. The Valley has Rodgers but here's the
conundrum: GB plays on Sunday night and if SF loses on Saturday, they
have nothing to play for. And even if they do, Rodgers could be pulled
if the game is out of hand. Now the Valley has just one back up QB and
that is Rodger's back up, Flynn. If SF loses they have a tough
decision unless Rodgers is declared completely out; but if he is they
obviously lose the Edge at the QB position. We'll call it a push if
Rodgers plays at least most of the game otherwise the edge goes to the
other two and a significant one at that.
|
| RB |
No one has particularly good matchups really but
Capital is in some trouble here. I know Gerhart has been coming
through but with AP now playing his playing time just isn't assured
and he really doesn't have another second RB. Yes he has Rice but so
does Schleprock and Schleprock also has Bush and Kevin Smith. The
Valley will be relying heavily on MJD because although he has been
great lately, Marshawn Lynch is going up against SF, a defense that
hasn't allowed a rushing TD ALL YEAR! They also have Felix Jones
playing against a resurging Philly defense and he also isn't 100%
healthy. So as the RB situation may not be great, at least Schleprock
and the Valley have some depth. I see Schleprock with a Slight edge
over the Valley and a Good edge over Capital.
|
| WR |
Even Capital will tell you they are surprised they got
this far. Their WRs don't stink but looking at their roster especially
compared to the other two, you would never have thought they make it
this far. Brees, Rice and mediocrity. Like we have been saying,
they've been at the right place at the right time lately which has
allowed them to overachieve to this point. I mean they are getting by
with guys like Nate Washington. Don't get me wrong, he has come
through when they needed him but in comparison with their competition
this week, it appears this time they are in the wrong place at the
wrong time. But the Championship Game itself is anything but the wrong
place to be! The Valley will ride Megatron and Schleprock's problem
will be who to play. They have some great matchups they can exploit
but they will have to decide on who sits. Maybe even one of their RBs
to get a fourth WR in there. Because of Megatron we will only give
Schleprock a Slight edge over the Valley but both have a Good edge
over Capital.
|
| K/Def |
No real Kicking edge but if I had to rank them
Schleprock would come in third. However the defenses could play a big
part this week. Schleprock has a clear advantage with both Pittsburgh
and SF, giving Schleprock even another decision to make. Capital is
middle of the road with Philly but here the Valley could lose some
ground with Chicago in Green Bay. However the matchup could get better
if Rodgers doesn't play. Schleprock Good Edge over Capital and Great
Edge over the Valley |
If Schleprock makes the right lineup decisions I believe they win the
2011 Championship |

The week's average was average. So average the yearly average didn't

● A
29-point effort from Commish Sandlot's Seattle defense had the
Clown frowning but Stafford picked it up in the second half finishing
with 35 and although the game wasn't final until Monday night, Ray Rice's
20 in the Sunday night game really put it out of reach. You could say
IC Lightning also won their game on Sunday night with Torrey Smith's
late TD. With the game actually reading as a 130-130 tie, IC Lightning
wins via the higher rank but technically the game isn't official until the
Thursday update. I guess Vincent will just have to sweat it out
until then while M4 gets to keep their hopes alive for defending
their title for a while longer.

The Score: Four straight 120+ weeks has put the 2011 yearly average
right on 2007's final record high mark of 120.1. From here it's just a
matter of 2011 finishing as the first or second highest year. Considering
the previous 5-year average of week 16 is 114.9 and week 17 ranks last at
108.8, most likely this year ends up as the second highest.

Reminder: There is another Thursday
game this week, the final one of the year. Also the majority of the games
will be played on Saturday this week with just one Sunday
game and one Monday game because of Christmas falling on a
Sunday this year. Next week the final week has every game played on
Sunday only.
● The Playoff Tournament will be held on Wednesday, January 4.
The Final League Meeting will be held on the following Wednesday,
January 11. The Playoff Tournament format is two conferences with separate
drafts and a maximum of 12 teams in each. Spots are given on a
first-come-first-serve basis so anyone interested should reserve a spot.
● The only wildcard remaining in the playoffs #5 Capital
has advanced to the Championship Game. The last time a wildcard won the
championship was the Downtowners in 2006. They did it with the #8
rank. The last and only time the #5 rank won was 2005. A wildcard has won
4 of the 15 championship games.
● While a repeat champion has yet to come about, repeat
championship game appearances is rather quite common. #1 Park Valley
repeats as the Central Conference Champion in search of their first
PFFL Title. Last year they won it with the #3 rank. If they win they will
be the first team to win it from the 9th draft position. Every draft
position has won except the 4, 5, 8, and 9th. Every eligible rank has won
except the 4th.
● Total points continue to accrue through week 17. The Conference and
League Total Point Champions are determined after week 17.
● All three conference championship games were decided on Monday
Night.
● Currently no teams have an efficiency rating below 80%. And
currently there are just two teams with a rating above 90%: Arnie's
Army 91.2% and Degos R Us 90.8%.
