Pittsburgh Survival Football
Survivor 1: In a year that had quite a
few twists and turns, the final week was devoid of any deviation as all three
remaining survivors picked the same team. Because of this win or lose all
three would share in the title. Was this intentional as a result of an 11th
hour deal? Always a chance of that but if so the details of course will stay
amongst the final three. Quite a feat making it to the final week no matter
how many get here so Congratulations: CHEZ 60, MANCINI4-2 and
TOMMYGUNS82 on winning the 2011 Pittsburgh Survival Football Contest.
Survival 2: Considering the previous 10
contests, 15 co-winners is just about right. The final survivor count has been
as little as 1 to as many as 70 in the second contest but added up together
the average comes out to just about 15; the exact number that will share in
the pot this year. There were 18 coming into the week. Losing in week 17 in
the second contest isn't quite as bad as losing in the first but it still has
its measure of disappointment. I would be remiss however if I didn't mention
that the 2 losing picks on Detroit seemed kind of a dare for the final
week. Yeah nobody expected Green Bay's backup QB to break records but
both had a 9-point favorite at home in Philadelphia available. I do see
the logic however hoping Philly gets upset making the shares suddenly
much more valuable while risking just a 1/15th share. Actually I admire the
strategy but it just didn't work out. Congratulations to the 15 winners of the
11th season of the Pittsburgh Survival Football Contest.

Looking Back at 20 Years of the
PFFL - 2010 Year 19 |
The 2010 Champions'
season was indicative of their name: Snake & Shake. First off their
creation was the result of a disagreement between owners of the Darryls
2009 team causing a spin off to the Snake & Shake 2010 team.
Although they eventually earned the #1 seed they mainly struggled until a
trade with the defending champions from the year before that sent Michael
Vick their way which they credit for their Championship. They cruised
through the playoffs but saved their biggest margin of victory for the
championship game itself 132-110-106. Although they did eventually win the
conference point title, they failed to win even a single weekly first the
entire year. They were the only team to win a championship without winning
a single weekly first. The one thing they did that wasn't out of the
ordinary was win the title from the 10th draft position making it the
fourth time a team picking from the 10 hole won it all; twice as many as
any other draft position.
The JR's Boys took a 50-point lead into week 17
and held on for a 38-point margin of victory in earning the 2010 PFFL
Point Title. The Syndicate not only earned the Enigma title but a
Consolation Tournament win also and French River won Coach of the
Year with a 88.8% rating. M4 won the inaugural season of the
Sandlot League and IC Lightning won the initial Sandlot Point
Title.

The Valley scored a hat trick with their
198 points in the final week. Besides posting the highest single week
score of the year replacing the TD's 193 in week 3, they locked up
the West Conference Title and passed up Schleprock to also win the
Overall PFFL Total Point Title. Not a bad week's work for sure. As
expected Cleantown wins the East easily and Schleprock's
solid 156 secured the West Title over the Bandits. |

|
|
The PFFL 2011
Good
Bad
and the UGLY |
The Good: After past disappointment,
Schleprock coming through with their first ever PFFL Title, and
although they don't win the overall, fight off the Bandits to win
the West Conference Point Title as well -- Park Valley winning back
to back Central Conference Titles and although they again fail to win the
Championship Game, finish the year with the highest single week of the
year and a PFFL Total Point Title -- Cleantown losing their last 4
games but still earning the #1 seed in the East, and to prove it was no
fluke, they win the East Total Point Title -- Capital winning the
East as a wildcard and playing in the Championship Game in their first
year in the League -- Schleprock putting an exclamation point on
their season by winning the Coach of the Year Award in the final week
finishing the year with an even 90.0% efficiency rating -- Bozo's
Circus winning the 2nd Sandlot League Title and doubling up winning
the Sandlot Point Title as well -- Arnie's Army's 7-game win
streak, the longest of the year -- Park Valley and Bid 66
Bandits 8-3-0 records, best of the year -- Park Valley's
159-point postseason average (weeks 12-17) highest in the league.
Commish East salvaging an injury riddled season with a Consolation
Tournament Victory -- Cousins Mc Sandlot team scoring 201 points in
week 17, only team to break 200 this year. -- Week 17's wild scoring,
second highest week of this year and the 4th highest ever --
Little Tommy of TnT as one of the 3 co-champions of the 11th
Pittsburgh Survival Contest -- The 2011 PFFL Championship Game, one
of the most exciting ever and highest scoring ever with an all-time
winning high
score of 173 -- The 20th Season of the PFFL, how time does fly!... |
The Bad: The Lockout -- Being one of
just 3 teams to have zero winnings on the year -- Drafting Peyton
Hillis, everyone who had him missed the playoffs entirely --
Capital dropping Percy Harvin in the week 7 waivers -- Earning
the CMON MAN award of the year by leaving Roethlisberger in
your lineup on his bye week while your other QB Stafford puts up 36
points -- The TD's earning just the 7th rank while ranked 1st in
Central points at the time -- After spending 6 straight weeks in 1st,
Brookline dropping to 3rd in the final regular season week and also
after a 6-week run at the top Arnie's Army losing the #1 spot in
the final week -- B&B Playing
Joe Flacco over Tom Brady and losing a game because of it
-- Cousins Mc carrying 4 defenses after the transaction deadline --
Frannie's Train's trades with Snake & Shake that cost them
a bye -- Losing your game anyway after making a desperation trade in an
effort to earn a wildcard -- The Detroit Lions final roster makeup:
4 TEs, 3 Ks, and 3 DEFs -- Having a 7 in the Coulda Won Column (JR's
Boys Sandlot League) -- Getting penalized for tackling the QB... |
The UGLY: First and foremost the injuries and I don't
believe I need to elaborate -- The Endzonerz week 7 score of 51,
the low week of the year and you
can throw in Frannie's Train 52 in the same week -- Commish West's postseason average 90.6 lowest in the
league, Commish West's season average 103.3 lowest in the league,
Commish West's season it don't get any lower -- The way Cleantown
earned the #1 seed -- An illegal shift penalty costing Bartertown a
postseason birth -- Capital's 7-game losing streak in the Sandlot
league -- The manner in which the Bid 66 Bandits lost the West
Conference Championship Game -- Losing a playoff game by the tie breaker --
Picking 16 winners in the Survivor Contest then picking a loser in week 17
-- Picking a loser in week 1 of the Survivor Contest -- The Weekend
Warriors in the East and Smokin Stogies in the Sandlot finish
to the season: three straight last-place finishes each -- Taking Jamaal
Charles with THE first pick in the draft (Smokin Stogies
Sandlot League)... |

* 2011 PFFL MVP Award Winner
|
| Usually
I have a fairly good idea who I will designate as the year's MVP before I
get to this point, but I must admit this year I just couldn't decide on
the one choice for the longest time. There were quite a few honorable mentions
and although I doubt if a kicker could ever win, I have to at least give
David Akers his due. Not only was his 200 points the most ever by a
kicker in our scoring system but it was also a ridiculous 35 more than the
next highest kicker and even 23 more than the best defense; marking the
first time a kicker had more points than a defense in the current 6-year
scoring system. Maybe if there were really no other remarkable
performances this year but that just wasn't the case. |
| Ray
Rice not only had the best year of any RB but also was on two of the
three Championship Teams. But the fact that he had about 100 less points
than the top point earner and was a very high first-round-draft choice, he
more or less did his job. Calvin Johnson also earned his high draft
status but again just had the year that was expected of him more or less.
I would be remiss if I didn't at least mention Gronkowski but
honorable mention, although indicative of a great year in itself, is all
we can give him because of what others accomplished. |
| Brady
was Brady as usual and we have to at least mention Cam Newton,
which I guess we just did; but by others we have to start with Aaron
Rodgers. What ever argument you make for him would be a good one. And
although I would have no problem if someone made him this year's choice, I
just can't get away from what Brees did. Not just scoring the most
points of any other player but especially what he did from week 12 on. He
was simply a monster not only in fantasy but the NFL also. The fact that
he not only broke Marino's yardage record but was also the winning QB in
the PFFL Championship Game, put him over the top. |

Sandlot Score:
Championship week may have been below average but the year's finale was
clearly above average raising the yearly average almost a half point. The
highest week of the year was 143 in week 2, the lowest
114 in week 7 and the final 2011 average
is 128.3. Considerably higher than last year's which we would
expect with the roster and scoring changes that were made. However even
without any changes this year would have been higher than lasts. |

● It's just an honorary title in
the Sandlot League as no prize is designated but congratulations anyway to
Joey's Place for the best coaching job of the year with a 93.7% efficiency
rating. No teams were under 80%. There were a total of 3 teams in the
Sandlot League above 90% compared to just 1 of the 36 teams in the Main
League.
● IC Lightning's 199 in week 2 held up as high week until
now. Cousins Mc's 201 in the final week takes over as the high week
for 2011 and prevents the Lighting from repeating. They won the honor last
year with an incredible 221 in week 9.

The Score: Well so much for tradition or trends: Not only wasn't week
17 below average as most final weeks have been, it was the highest
finishing week ever and by a lot. Actually it was the 2nd highest of this
year and the 4th highest ever of all weeks. Week 2's 134.7 was this year's
high coming awful close to the single highest week of 134.8 in week 3 of
2007. And 102.3 in week 7 was the low but not even close to the 96.7 low
of week 17 in 2009. This years final average of 120.8 sets a new
6-year high beating out the previous high of 120.1 for 2007. The new
overall average of the current now 6-year scoring system and next year's
beginning average is 117.5.

Information
2011 Playoff Tournament Site
● Not one #1 draft pick finished in the top 10 in scoring.
Arian Foster taken in the West #1 faired best finishing at #16 even
though he started the year injured. Adrian Peterson was taken #1 in
the East and Central finished at #59 overall and the #1 pick in the
Sandlot Jamaal Charles didn't last two games before going out for
the season.
● Not one team was below 80% in coaching efficiency this year.
In fact there was just a 9% difference in the worst and best teams. Parity
reached the coaching at least as the
entire league was between 81.0 and 90.0%.
● Commish West is the only team with a zero in the Woulda
Lost Column. What does this mean? What does it matter?
● Park Valley came close with 198 in the final week but
no team reached 200 this year. Last year the barrier was breached just once
by the Endzonerz with 210 in week 11. The 200 mark was reached
however in the Sandlot League. Cousins Mc's Sandlot team posted
that leagues high mark in the final week with a 201.
● Matt Flynn's 6-TD-48-point performance wasn't the
highest player week of the year but it was the 2nd highest. Wes Welker
in week 3 and Aaron Rodgers in week 4 both put up 51. The best ever
performance by a QB was Michael Vick's 52 in week 10 of last year.
The record is held by Chris Johnson and his 55 in week 2 of 2009.
The only player to have a better week than Vick other than
Johnson was Brandon Marshall and his 53 in week 14 of 2009.
● Of the top 10 point earners, 8 were QBs, 1 was a RB (#6
Ray Rice) and 1 was a WR (#8 Calvin Johnson).

PFFL Trivia Answer |
New England Patriots |
| Six
teams topped the 400-point mark in the season, but only one team topped
500. The Patriots scored 518 points, averaging 32.3 points per game,
compared to 2009 averaging 26.6. Other teams that topped the 400-point
mark were the Colts, Chargers, Raiders, Eagles, and Falcons. |
